I smile when I'm sneaking >> Through shadows by the wall >> I laugh when I'm creeping >> But you won't hear me at all
(Judas Priest - ‘The Ripper’)

Logan was good at stealth. Extremely good at it. Super senses were not without their benefits, and tracking a target and keeping it in his sights was one of them. Some might be forgiven for thinking he was stalking prey, and any other time it would probably have been true.

But she wasn’t his prey. She was just someone he hadn’t seen in a while. Someone who had apparently put a decent amount of effort into avoiding him while she visited the mansion, and that was something that had only served to spark his curiosity. He was hardly about to ignore the scents of jasmine, berries and fresh cut grass as they tickled his nostrils. He knew who the scents belonged to before he even clapped eyes on her.

It was those scents mixed in with the smell of flaring matches, and cookies, along with the sight of a boy in Marie’s arms that had him following her. His mind went to the recent conversation online he’d shared with a kid and his so-called father; the reason why he smelt like matches. Logan had thought Allerdyce had been yanking his chain, but his senses never lied.

The blue eyes, the smile, the hair… It was all real fuckin’ familiar. Logan’s hazel eyes narrowed, and he dropped back a few paces to give the mother and son more space. If anyone asked him directly, he’d lie through his teeth that he felt betrayed. For Rogue to keep something like a son from him hurt.

She didn’t owe him anything, though. It was a miracle she’d ever owned up to marrying Allerdyce, even if just about everyone in the entire fucking world knew. Something in Logan questioned her trust of him, but then Rogue stopped walking down the corridors and turned to look back at him. So much for stealth.

He gazed into her brown eyes, and his features softened. She came back down the corridor to close the distance between them and he found himself returning her smile. He was such a softie when it came to her. And he’d kill anyone that decided to tease him about it.

Rogue turned a little so Logan could see Tommy’s face. “Logan, this is-this is my son.”

“Hey kid,” Logan said gruffly.

Tommy’s face broke out into a grin, big blue eyes looking at Logan steadily. Rogue kissed the top of his head, and he pulled a face before straightening up a little so he was more equal to his ‘Uncle’.

Logan arched an eyebrow, and waited for the kid to say something. He flicked his eyes up to meet Rogue’s and grunted at her look of amusement. “Cat got your tongue, kid?”

Tommy shook his head, and stuck it out so Logan could see for himself. “Nope.”

Logan smirked, and folded his arms across his chest. “That’s good to know. Can’t ever be careful.” He cocked his head, and glanced back at Rogue. “Whatcha doin’ here, Marie?”

“We’re gonna see Hank. I promised him he could give Tommy a checkup this week.” She turned her head to rub her nose against her shoulder, and laughed softly at seeing Tommy still gazing at Logan. Apparently the hero worship ran in the family. “I didn’t meant to-”

“It’s okay,” Logan grunted as he jutted out his chin in the boy’s direction. “Just don’t be a stranger, okay?”

She gave a nod, and rubbed her son’s back as she started back down the corridor. “You gonna have some time later?”

“I always got time for ya, Marie.” He was watching Tommy the whole time, his eyebrow remaining arched. The kid poked out his tongue again as he gave Logan a big grin, and Logan bared his teeth in mock fury. He chuckled as the kid tried to hide against his Momma. Maybe Allerdyce had finally got something right.
