I am taking French 1 this quarter. I figured that since it has been 14 years since I last took French I should start at the beginning again for review. I had 2 years of French in Junior High and 4 in High School (I also took 2 years of Spanish). I went to France for about 2 weeks the summer between my Junior and Senior years of High School.
I always loved French and was by all acounts pretty decent at speaking it (even according to the nice college students our tour group met in Nice), spelling is another matter since the spelling rules I use to beat my dyslexia into submission in English (with more success some times than other i know!) don't apply. I seem to have a decent ability to learn language (and sometimes wonder if this relates to hearing multiple languages in utero as my parents lived in Spain until right before I was born) I find it all fascinating, how the language and culture are intertwined and how rarely an actual literal translation from one language to another conveys the words AND intent/feeling of what was said.
I am loving my class and learning fun new words even though this is a 101 class, I think because the college text approaches thing differently than the high school ones. I remember a LOT, and a lot more than I thought I would. My teacher is a character and I like her teaching style, she is originally from Egypt and speaks 4 or 5 languages.
I wish I could minor in something but it really isn't possible with a "two year" degree. It makes me wish even more that I could be a student full time at a four year school. Only French 1-3 are offered here.
