TiVO recorded VH1's Classic Albums episode on The Who's "Who's Next", and I took a few minutes to watch some snippets from it this evening.
The first song by The Who that I remember liking was
Behind Blue Eyes from Who's Next. My local radio station (when I was in high school) had played it one day and I recorded it onto a cassette, and later replayed it over & over. Wikipedia describes the lyrics as "and full of angst", and that's certainly how I remember the vast majority of my teenage years. and if I shiver, please give me a blanket, keep me warm, let me wear your coat. As if.
Somewhat later, I don't even quite remember how, I came across
Tommy at a local record shop. It was not long after I started to drive, and I would occasionally visit this shop and, every once in a while, buy albums (well, always cassettes) that I was intrigued by, mostly if I liked music from the artist.
Perhaps I saw Tommy on television. The first half of the movie (and album) was never that appealing; the Holiday Camp was too scary for words. Of all the time I've spent listening to Tommy, I'd say 95% of it has been the second half, starting with "Do You Think It's Alright?/Fiddle About" (I was old enough to know what "fiddling about" was) through "We're Not Going To Take It".
The song I liked most of all, at least to start, was Pinball Wizard. Even today I much prefer the version of that song from The Who's Tommy concept album rather than Elton John's from the movie (or any other version of his). Later, I came to appreciate Sally Simpson (a young girl trying to find her own way against her parents' wishes), Sensation, and Go To The Mirror. what is happening in his head?
Later, after I'd really latched onto Tommy, I came to dislike the film as much too flashy, so I remain ardently devoted to the concept album. I suppose that's no different to my fondness for the original "Jean Jacket" version of Andrew Lloyd Webber/Tim Rice's musical "Joseph & His Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat". Why mess with perfection?
