This Week's Theme: Adoption

Jun 11, 2010 21:39

Hello, lovelies!

Well, it's been a grand week for recommending Animagus fics, and I think (maybe?) some more may still be coming in.

Anyway, this week's theme is (drumroll, please):

ADOPTIONAdoption!fic. By this we mean any fanwork in which adoption is a major theme; a character could be adopted, or doing the adopting. We're talking human ( Read more... )

Okay, I'll start this off with the "gimme":

Title:A Year Like None Other by aspeninthesunlight (aka aspenlight). The sequels, as well, but they make no sense until you've read through the first story.
Author's summary: COMPLETE. It all started with a letter from home and family. Except, Harry doesn't really have either, does he? He's about to get them. A Snape-adopts-Harry story providing an alternate 6th year. Winner: Multifaceted Best Genfic, Best Draco Fic.
songquake's comment: One of the best fics I've ever read. I've been following it since 2004; the third sequel is still in progress.
Parent: Severus Snape; adoptees: Harry AND Draco.

Your links for Stealing Harry and Laocoon's Children don't work. I used the fictionalley links because Sam said he is going to migrate the LJ story archive. to dreamwidth, I think. Also, he decided some time ago just to let go of Laocoon's Children. He said he knows he won't finish it so he published notes, outtakes and an epilogue of sorts in sam_storyteller.

I don't know if this is allowed, but 'Harry's Baby Boy', and it's sequel 'Family' has a strong adoptive theme. You can find the fics on the author's yahoo group (which is the only place), under the author's Files.

Title: Harry's Baby Boy; Sequel: Family
Author:Danu3
Link: http://ca.groups.yahoo.com/group/emmadanu3/
Pairing: Harry/Draco
Summary: Harry adopts his two-year-old cousin
Rating: No rating given, but if I remember correctly, it's pretty tame.

I have a question. Does "adoption" refer to official papers or processes of some kind or could it refer to the AU category that I know as "raising Harry" where Sirius Black raises his godson. Stories like the famous "Stealing Harry."

Good question. I'd assumed an official process - but perhaps there is no official process in the wizarding world?

Okay, so how about this: The person raising the child must not be a biological parent, must commit to lifelong parenting of said child (or at least until age of majority), and (I think this is important - I think surrogacy and adoption are two different issues) must not have been one of the "intended" parents of the child.

The fanwork in question does not necessarily need to focus on the process of adoption, but the fact that the adult is neither a biological nor an original parent should figure in.

Sound good?

Understandable to me. So Godfather Sirius raising Harry doesn't count as adoption. Likewise, neither does Godfather Harry raising Teddy.

Also, excludes blood relatives like Andromeda/Teddy, Gran/Neville, Petunia/Harry.

But for instance, I know of a great story where Remus raises Harry after James and Lily are murdered and Sirius is sent to Azkaban. No "papers." The werewolf's fight to keep Harry is an integral part of the tale.

I don't know; I don't think that a godparent is necessarily an "intended" parent... And I think that AU post-Azkaban Sirius raising Harry could be a grand "adoption" fic. But raising relatives seems a lot less like what folks consider "adoption" to be.

Should we put a poll to the comm, or just decide to take whatever comes? Because, since there are multiple understandings of what could constitute an "adoption" fic, I don't want to make a unilateral (or mod-lateral) decision very much.

I'd love to read the Remus story you just mentioned.
