Aurelius Paracelsus Trevelyan was born the only son of the last male line of the old and esteemed Trevelyan family. While undoubtedly his pedigree made his life smoother in those times, it was never anything that he took particular pride in. Upon attending Hogwarts, he was sorted into Ravenclaw, applying himself hard to his studies as his house would suggest. Unlike his rough contemporary, Tom Riddle, he would never be described as a “brilliant” student. He was quiet and reserved, and did not push himself forwards to the Quidditch team, to become a Prefect, or any of the other distinctions in the school.
He graduated from Hogwarts in 1943. During the remaining war years, he is known to have engaged in his own studies, his family's wealth allowing him to survive without employment. Following the turmoil of the war, Aurelius finally had the freedom to travel the world in safety. He had been waiting for this opportunity to conduct research into magic around the globe. For him, a particular fascination was ancient magic, which had been apparently long-since forgotten.
Aurelius' research touched upon the fields of archaeology and anthropology as he delved into those physical remains that stood as testament to possible magical practices, and siphoned information out of folklore. In addition to research into ancient magical practice, he studied with wizards around the world, encountering various regional variations on magical practice. He spent decades pursuing a diverse range of studies, and has a certain cult status amongst more academically inclined wizards. However, he has released a comparatively small amount of work. He has specifically prohibited mass publication of any of his work, generally providing copies of work to those who show interest in the subject, and giving them limited permission to make discretionary copies. These works have become somewhat of a collectors item in certain circles, and do little to quash the image of Aurelius as somewhat of an eccentric.
Over the 70 years since has graduation, Aurelius has returned only a few times. He has served a couple of short residences there as a guest professor, as he has at many other wizarding schools around the world. The only permanent teaching job he has held was a 2 year stretch at Durmstrang in the early 70s, where he taught History. He left the school with fellow Professor Erika Stark, with whom he was to share a somewhat tumultuous relationship. While the couple never married, they did stay together for the majority of the time after their departure, despite occasional disagreements. They shared a passion for knowledge, and travelled the world again as Aurelius had previously. The couple did not become involved with the war against Voldemort.
His life continued much as it had before, until 1995, while he and Erika were attempting to track down Baba Yaga's hut in the Urals. An unknown Death Eater (or other practicitoner of the Dark Arts) broke into the old fort they were using as a base of operations, killing Erika and wounding Aurelius before making his escape. Following Erika's death, Aurelius became (if possible) more reclusive than he had previously. This remained the case until Professor Slughorn was finally able to persuade him to take up the position of Professor of Ancient Runes and Head of Ravenclaw House at Hogwarts.
Character's Appearance
Tall and gaunt, Aurelius dresses almost exclusively in old-fashioned, formal black robes at the school, accompanied by a pointed black hat. His face is angular and weathered, with heavy-lidded eyes of a piercing blue, and a generally severe expression. His steel-grey hair is kept in a short, neat style. He walks with a pronounced limp in his right leg, and the aid of a walking cane. The cane is carved with mystic sigils that seem to move whenever they aren't being watched. His voice is deep and melodic. He'd be played by Christopher Lee, ideally.
