My dad works at JobCorps. It is a program that helps displaced teens and young adults learn a trade, life skills and get education in a safe environment. He is also a minster. He asked the kids to observe a moment of silence for Corretta Scott King's passing and several asked "Who is that?" I was devasted and so was he. What happened to knowing American icons? What happened to the knowledge of great leaders in general including Civil Rights Leaders?
Working with children, I thought I ask who there black role models were. I got the usual, ball players and acotrs and actresses and singers and politicians (Condoleeza Rice). These are not bad role Models mind you and I am not knocking the Oprah Lovers and Packers Ball players. I was just hoping for some depth of thought from 16 year olds.
I followed up and asked if they knew things that I found amazing. Like the fact that the Author of "he Three Muskateers" was black. I asked if they knew that the first open heart surgery was done by a black man. I also asked if they knew that PDiddy was a college graduate and a true business man. The lack of knowledge that many teens (not all, many) disturbs me sometimes. I had better finish this blooy degree and get into the school system soon.
There are a wonderful bunch of teens and young people on this site in general, on the OrangeTrees Community, and FAP that just amaze me with their knowledge, intelligence, thirst for life and knowledge. It makes me smile when I think of you. Thanks for being an inspiration to me.
RIP Mrs. King.
