We sit in class, blank expressions on both our faces, watching the minute hand make its slow laps around the clock until that final moment when class is almost over and we are awakened from the stupor that had consumed us. The bell rings, serving as an alarm clock to wake us up from our daydreams, throwing us back into the churning pool of reality. As we rise from our seats, we look to each other and our eyes meet. For what feels like lifetimes our gaze holds, creating a bridge that can be crossed to see inside the other's soul. What thoughts lie behind those warm brown eyes? Their depths are infathomable, and yet for just this second I am plunging down into them, racing towards that deep secret longing I know must be there. Before I can make the discovery I have been fervently searching for, I am jerked back into myself as our gaze shatters, littering the floor like shards of glass. The peices tauntingly wink up at us, willing us to dare to fit them back together. Neither one moves, however, and we turn away, tearing our eyes from what could have been as it lies broken on the floor.
