The Fight by HPFangirl71

Harry and Draco walked hand in hand down the snow covered sidewalk. The streetlights cast a warm glow upon everything, as falling snowflakes doused their uncovered heads. The two had just spent a wonderful evening kissing and cuddling in a booth at their favorite Italian restaurant. The perfection of the evening had put Harry in a rather sentimental sort of mood. Then again, he was a Gryffindor; it didn’t take much to get him feeling either sentimental or nostalgic, especially where Draco was concerned.

It was only a handful or so of months since the war’s ending and Harry still couldn’t believe where he’d wound up. Auror training and Ginny Weasley had been put on hold in lieu of some epic soul searching. In the end he’d realized he didn’t really care for fighting or girls for that matter. So Harry had started another quest, the quest to redefine himself. Taking Draco Malfoy for a lover had definitely not been on that agenda plan. In fact, it was so far off the roster that he still hadn’t told his best friends yet. Maybe tonight would be the night…

Draco had pulled Harry close, their noses brushing together as their lips found one another. The kiss was soft and tender beneath the golden lighting. Perhaps, Draco too was growing sentimental. Harry chuckled inwardly at the very idea.  Reluctantly, he broke the kiss but kept Draco close.

“I’m thinking of telling Ron and Hermione about us.” Harry whispered as Draco pressed a gentle kiss against his temple.

Draco pulled back, staring into his boyfriend’s eyes, a look of surprised shock clouding his own.

“I don’t think that’s a very good idea.” He said curtly before pushing Harry away.

“And just why the hell not?” Harry demanded loudly.

Draco had taken several steps down the street and Harry hurried to catch up to the man.  His fingers caught the edge of Draco’s cashmere coat and the blonde spun around to face him. Harry could see something dangerous brewing behind the steel coloured eyes and for some reason it frightened him.

“Draco, we need to at least talk about this. Don’t be so stubborn. I really think it’s time we let everyone know about us.”

“Why now, Potter? You seemed pretty content to keep it a secret four months ago! Why go and ruin things now?” Draco spat out in a sharply clipped tone of voice.

His attitude was shocking Harry. This was a serious step he was taking here. He’d truly thought Draco would be happy about his decision. Apparently, he’d been wrong.

“I’m not trying to ruin anything. I just thought you’d like people to know.” Harry mumbled defensively.

“Why? So they can know I’ve become Saint Potter’s subservient little bitch! Not likely…”

His boyfriend’s words stung Harry, making him wince inwardly. Draco had an acerbic side but it was something Harry had learned to accept in order to get to know the man. This however, this was just downright cruel. Swallowing down his disappointment he shrugged his shoulders.

“Forget it; I don’t know what I was thinking.” Harry spat out.

“I don’t know either. Oh wait, maybe it was the fact that you could play the damn hero once again? Look, I’m not some girl, Potter! I don’t need Prince Charming on a white steed to come and rescue me, I’m doing just fine on my own!”

The callous words left Harry feeling hurt but he refused to show it. Showing their vulnerable sides wasn’t something either of them did very often and this definitely wasn’t the time to start.

“Fuck you, Malfoy! I don’t have to stand here and listen to these insults.” Harry practically screamed.

“Then don’t.”

Draco blurted the words out before he realized their implication. And before he could take them back, Harry had disappeared from the cold night. The faint shimmer of Apparition was the only sign that he and Draco had been cuddling together, on this very street, just moments ago. That and the tears now glistening within Draco’s silver eyes…
