Summary: It was fifth year and everything was about to change for the two of us...
A/N: This is part one of three and it is in Albus' P.O.V.
We had been friends from that first day, then, inevitably, we became the very best of friends, along with my cousin, Rose. Mostly, though, it was just me and Scorp because Rose was in Ravenclaw and we were in Gryffindor. The first four years at Hogwarts had been amazing, but I had a feeling that this year was going to be... different. Thankfully nothing had come of that feeling, and now that the school year was almost over, I was breathing a little easier.
We were sitting in the Great Hall with Rose and her sometimes boyfriend, Henry Longbottom, also in Ravenclaw. It was a study period and we were all studying for our Transfiguration O.W.L. exam. Not that there was much studying going on, it was more like Scorp and I were trying to tune out the bickering couple sitting across from us.
"What do you mean you don't know what you want to do after you graduate?" Rose asked Henry, incredulous. Rose was the very essence of her parents. She had fizzy red hair, freckles on her nose, the typical Weasley temper, and was sharp as a tack. Henry, on the other hand, was Neville Longbottom reincarnated, with the exception of his personality.
Henry gave a sigh and said, "I just don't know, Rosie. There's so much out there. I mean, I could be a teacher like my dad, or work at the Ministry like your dad and Uncle Harry, or I could -"
He was interrupted by Rose's hand covering his mouth. "First of all, I'm not in the mood to be called 'Rosie', and second, how many times have we had this conversation over the past five years?"
Henry rolled his eyes and removed Rose's hand from over his mouth. "Many, Rose, and how many times have I changed my mind?"
This would go on and on, we knew, until one or both of them ran out of steam and they forgot what they had been fighting about. Scorp and I looked at each other and mentally agreed to head for the Gryffindor common-room, where we knew it would be empty. Aside from the few fifth year students who'd stayed behind to get in a few more study hours, the rest of the school was enjoying their last Hogsmeade weekend.
We said our goodbyes to Rose and Henry, not that they heard us, and headed up to our Sanctuary.

"What do you think?" Scorp asked me as we walked into the common-room.
"About what? Rose and Henry?" I said, looking at Scorp as we sat down in front of the fire. As I'd expected, it was completely deserted. Scorp nodded.
"Oh, there's no doubt in my mind that they're going to get married one day." I said with a grin.
Scorp laughed and nodded. "I think so, too."
He turned his head and looked into the fire, still smiling. I turned my head slightly, not so that I was looking at him full on, but sort of sideways. The fire turned his pale face a kind of pinky-orange, not an unattractive colour on him. This thought should have freaked me out, but I'd had too many of them lately to try and talk myself out of it.
There was no helping that I thought my best friend was quite attractive. It wasn't the first time I'd thought this about another boy, but it was the first time thinking it about Scorpius Malfoy.
I sighed and looked away, knowing that it was fruitless to dwell on something that was impossible.
Scorp heard me sigh and turned his head towards me. "What?" He asked.
I looked up at him with a half smile, but all I said was, "Just worrying about our O.W.L.s next week."
Scorp frowned, doing something to my insides, got up and pulled me up with him. He turned me around so that I was facing him and put his hands on my shoulders. He was a good three or four inches taller than me, so I had to look up at him.
"Albus Severus Potter, you are the most brilliant wizard, aside from Rose, that I have ever met. No matter what you set out to do, you always do it bloody perfect. It kind of drives me nuts sometimes, but that's why your my best friend. What really gets me angry is when you worry or beat yourself up over things that we all know you're going to do fine on. I know you're not one to boast, but sometimes you need to have a lot more faith in yourself and your abilities. Like I do." He finished.
He had taken his hands off of my shoulders, and I missed them there.
I looked up into his grey eyes, which were filled with frustration directed at me, and couldn't help myself. I put my hands on his shoulders, stood on tip-toe, and kissed him. It all happened in the span of a few seconds, but the damage was done. I let go of him and took a step back. My hands were shaking, either from embarrassment or fear, I wasn't quite sure. I couldn't stop looking at Scorp. His eyes were huge grey saucers of shock. His eyes never left mine, not even as his right hand came up to lightly touch his still parted lips. Then his look of shock changed to confusion and he started to say, "Al, I-"
He didn't get any farther though because as soon as his shock had worn off, I'd bolted. I ran out of the common-room, down the hall, and just kept on running. I didn't know where I was running to, but I knew I had to keep going.
