What is the history of the symbol of the Deathly Hallows?

I'm asking for a pretty specific reason. I am a graduate student at the Medieval Institute in Kalamazoo, MI. There are a sizable number of HP fans among us in the department. :) A week or two ago, one of them pointed out something to the rest of us ...

Namely that we've been using this symbol for the Institute for several years. Look familiar?

XD Oddly enough, we only seem to use it on some publications, mainly the ones associated with the Internation Medieval Congress we host every year. It's on this year's Call for Papers that we just sent out, and it's been on the Congress Bulletin every year for some time.

I've been told that the graphic designer for our publishing house came up with it (and she happens to be an HP fan herself), so I'm going to have to ask where she got it from the next time I see her.

But ... interesting, no?
