Photo Manips

So.... I'm really horrible at making photo manips, which is sort of necessary to make "shippy" icons, and I was wondering if anyone had a good tutorial about making a manip and then turning it into an icon or knows of one?

ETA: Forgot to mention, I use PaintShopPro8 but I do have the trial version of PhotoshopCS2
