“Scorpius Malfoy, you shut your mouth before I shut it for you!” Lily Potter had worked herself into a fine lather.
“Oh, I’d really like to see what a little girl can do about it. Your brother shouldn’t have shoved me.”
“Al didn’t mean to! He bumped into you by accident and you know it! I saw the whole thing! You’re just a bully!”
Al tugged on the sleeve of Lily’s robe. “Just let it go, Lil. It’s not a big deal.”
“Let it go!?! Did you hear what he called you? I’m going to curse him good and proper.” Lily was sounding dangerous now, calm and determined. Al shrugged. He was the peacemaker in the family and didn’t really have time for his sister’s waspish ways. He headed off towards the Great Hall, wanting no part of the mess.
“Hey, chicken! You’re gonna leave your baby sister here to deal with me alone?” Scorpius taunted Albus.
Al called over his shoulder, “I wouldn’t underestimate her if I were you.”
Before Scorpius could push further, he collapsed on the ground, clutching at his face. Wings had sprouted everywhere and were flapping mightily. Shrieking in a rather unmanly way, Scorpius ran in the direction of the hospital wing while the other students’ laughter rang in his ears.
Al looked back and saw Lily clutching her wand and smirking. He wished she’d do a better job of keeping herself out of trouble, but everyone had to admit. Lily Potter was not a girl to mess with, first year or no.
“Hey, sis! Great Bat Bogey Hex.” James Potter had heard the commotion and stopped to see what was going on. He had a bunch of his fourth-year cronies with him, and even they were cheering Lily.
She shrugged. “Mom taught me. It’s not hard.” But she was still smirking in a satisfied way. “That Scorpius is a jerk and a bully. Hopefully he’ll learn to watch himself around the Potters from now on.” She turned on her heel, long red hair swinging behind her. He crowd of admirers followed behind. There was no doubt that she was the most popular first year. James smiled. She reminded him of their mother so strongly sometimes.
Albus had walked back down the hall when he heard James’s voice, and the two boys exchanged grins, proud of their baby sister.
“We’re going to have a hell of a time with her when she starts dating.” James predicted.
“What do you mean, when?” Albus asked incredulously. “I think we just got a taste of it now.”
James gaped at him. “Lily and Scorpius Malfoy? But you heard her say what she thinks of him?”
“Pretty much exactly what our grandmother Lily thought of our grandfather when she met him. They certainly worked it out.”
James knew the story, but trust Albus, the perceptive one, to show James the correlation. “Well, we’d better start keeping an eye on young Malfoy now, then.”
Albus grinned. “I doubt Lily needs our help.”
