I never went to my high school prom. It wasn't a big deal to me. Hell, I didn't even notice it come up and pass me by. All I heard about it was that it was a crappy prom. I guess that's what happens when your yearmates lack just as much school spirit as you that they can't pull off their own prom.
I never gave it much though. Never had any regret about not going. As an Elite member of the review site I'm a part of, I get special invitations each month to attend Elite events. They are events hosted by the review site where I don't have to pay a bloody thing. I get to RSVP, get confirmed, show up and enjoy. Free eats, free drinks, and loads of fun.
This month's theme was Prom: Night on the Nile. Thankfully for me, there was no dress code, but indulging my silly girly side, I did go shopping a bit for dresses. I had a grand idea about a sari, but I am realistic enough that I didn't put too much faith in making that happen - and it was good that I didn't. I realized I didn't want to wear the sari because I am unused to saris and the ones I have are so pretty that I would've been extremely sad if they had gotten ruined.
As for the dresses, well, they were a qualified disaster, but I did not stress over it too much. I had the inkling that I'd be attending my Elite Prom in slacks and a top. All was good. I was dressed down in all black, since it's my most comfortable colour, and a gold tiara with a bit of turqoise in the middle. I got my hair cut (and it looks lovely - I will be sad when I wash it and it gets curly and crazy again), and I did my make-up at home.
However... when I got there, I got a ticket for a free mini-makeover. Who am I to refuse? I went to the loo, got the make-up off my face and let them do me up. They did a REALLY nice job. I didn't want to wash my make-up off when I got home.
The Prom event was nice enough, held at the Egyptian Theatre near Hollywood & Highland. Free booze. Free mini eats. A photobooth where you can cram in with friends and props and do black and white shots. People walking around snapping pictures of you and your friends. Another set up for pictures. There were electronic hookahs you could walk around smoking. There was beer and wine and spiked punch. There were mini cupcakes. There were ice cream cones. ... All I ate were two bacon-wrapped dates and an ice cream cone. All I drank were two cups of spiked punch and a couple of sips of a terrible red wine that tasted like melted butter.
Prom was well enough, but by the end of the night, I was tired, hungry, sore and grumpy. Sore because I was still feeling the effects of the hike (hell! I still feel it). But I'm glad I went. I knew LOADS of people, and they knew me, and everyone was pretty much having a great time.
What a nice prom. A nice adult event. And even though I am fully knackered today, at least I made it to work and am getting through the last leg of the day.
I'm looking forward to the three-day weekend.
... OH! And Karen made a corsage for me! She brought all the tools for it with her since she was on Prom Committee helping out! And as I was waiting for my make-over, she just whipped one up for me! It was really quite pretty!
