sinfuldraconis Title: Moving On
Pairings: Draco/Hermione, Oliver/Hermione
Rating: G
Summary: Moving on is sometimes more difficult than people expect.
Notes: I’ve taken a lot of liberties with Quidditch and how the World Cup is played, as well as how each country’s teams are made. I’ve made Britain’s Quidditch team into an All Star sort of team you would find in American sports, such as Major League Baseball. This is totally AU.
Draco stepped into the celebration room and immediately spotted the ‘Man of the Hour.’ Oliver Wood, one of the most famous Keepers in the Quidditch circle, had just been named to Britain’s National team, and Puddlemere was throwing him a party of epic proportions.
When Draco had been signed to Puddlemere last year, they had formed an unusual friendship. They worked well together as teammates, and even found themselves spending time together away from the pitch.
That had all changed two months ago, at their last game of the season. Draco had just arrived at the stadium when Wood walked in the door with none other than Hermione Granger on his arm. Draco had stopped in his tracks, staring at the woman with the bushy hair who had haunted his thoughts for a long time. It took her a few minutes to realize he was staring at her, but when she did finally notice him, she turned away from his gaze and whispered something to Wood, something that had them turning and moving in the opposite direction to where Draco was standing.
His fondness for Wood had soured immediately upon seeing him with Hermione. He hadn’t been thrilled when the announcement had been made that Wood had been named to the national team, and that Puddlemere was hosting a party that all the team players were required to attend.
Draco knew he would see Hermione again at the party because the newspapers were reporting that Wood and Hermione were still going strong. He was surprised when he entered the party to not find Hermione at Wood’s side. He looked around the room, but didn’t spot her anywhere.
Draco found himself hoping that the reports in the paper were wrong and that Wood and Hermione were no longer an item. He felt a bit more relaxed, not seeing her in the room. Draco headed to the bar and ordered a Firewhisky, hoping that his presence wouldn’t be required for more than an hour or so.
“I’m surprised you’re here tonight,” Hermione said as she walked up to the bar next to Draco.
Draco hand tightened on his glass as he turned to look at Hermione. Her hair was up off her neck and swept away from her face, showing him how beautiful she still looked. Clearing his throat, he mumbled, “I had no choice. All the players were told that this was a mandatory club function.”
“I see,” she replied, sipping from her champagne glass.
Draco didn’t want to be around her. He didn’t want to think about the past and the time they had spent together. He pushed away from the bar and started to head past her.
Hermione reached out, grabbing his arm. “Draco, I think we should talk.”
“There’s nothing to talk about,” he responded. “You’re with Wood, and that’s that.”
“It’s not something that was planned. It just happened.”
Draco chuckled bitterly. “I’m sure that’s just the way it was.”
Hermione sighed deeply. “I want to be friends, Draco. I don’t want this wall in between us.”
Draco turned to Hermione, the anger and hurt flashing in his eyes. “I signed the divorce papers today…a divorce that you requested, yet you want me to be friends with you?”
“I know it will be difficult, but-”
“You don’t know ‘difficult,’ Hermione. You don’t know how hard it is to wake up in the middle of the night to reach for your wife only to find she’s not there.”
“I’m sorry.”
Draco looked at her and could see that the Hermione he had once known and loved was gone. In her place was a new woman, a woman who was out for herself, not caring who she injured in the process. Draco knew at that moment, that even if it took the rest of his life he was going to force himself to get over the woman who had shattered his world.
