Title: Paralysis
Pairing: Snape/Moody
Theme: The steam of my misfortunes / Has given me the power to be afraid - Smashing Pumpkins, Porcelina of the Vast Oceans

Moody huddled in the armchair, clutching his wand in his sweaty right hand, waiting for the cramp in his leg to alleviate. The Healers offered potions, but he’d be caught dead before drinking them.

Last summer he kept hearing the trash bins rattle outside. Moody then spent a year in his own trunk while Voldemort returned to power.

The closed door and windows suffocated him, so he waved his wand at them and they opened. He closed and opened and closed them again and again and again… ‘Constant Vigilance’ hovered vaguely in his brain.

The front door suddenly flew open. Moody stood up despite the cramp, wand at the ready. After a moment, Snape walked in.

Snape sneered. “Albus wants you back.”

Moody was torn between begging Snape to stay and locking him out.

Moody thought he saw something like sympathy move across Snape’s eyes, but then Snape kneeled in front of him. Moody couldn’t move. He felt Snape’s hair tickling his cheek.

“I…” Snape stammered and drew back. Snape’s eyes returned to their usual dark, cold selves.

“You know where to go,” Snape said and swooped out the door.

A new crack formed on the wall when Moody slammed the door behind Snape.

Title: Anger

Moody clunked into the Order Meeting at Twelve Grimmauld Place. Molly and the children had cleared away a lot of the grime and some of the dark magical items - but they couldn't scrub away the hatred in the air. He sat down next to Albus and nodded at Molly and Arthur. Moody scowled at Snape who was talking.

"...assure you I did not let him know anything." He said looking tired and pale.

"Severus, no one is accusing you. If you did not have my complete trust, you would not be here in this meeting." Albus's voice was calm and brooked no opposition.

"Alistor, how is Harry? Is he safe?" All eyes at the table shifted to Moody.

"Yeah. He's allowed to go out of the house. He rummages for newspapers in the trash. Smart lad. Knows something is being kept from him." Moody sniffed at the jug of juice on the table and pulled out his battered leather hip flask.

"I've explained my reasons for keeping Harry in the dark to everyone present. We agreed-"

"Headmaster, we all understand that Potter must be kept safe and that he has the insufferable arrogance to think he knows better-" Snape was cut off by Sirius.

"Don't you dare call him arrogant!" Remus grabbed Sirius's arm and kept him from leaving his seat.

In the midst of all the shouting Mrs. Black's portrait started to shriek. Bill was sent to deal with her and to see if someone was at the door. He returned with an extremely upset Mundungus Fletcher.

"Dumbledore! Dementors in Privet Drive!" Dung hopped nervously back and forth from one foot to the other.

"You left Harry with Dementors?" Sirius broke away from Lupin and towered over Mundungus.

"Course he didn't. Boy can repel Dementors." Moody said calmly as he poked his pocket knife into a piece of cheese he had had in his pocket.

"Quiet. Everyone settle down." Dumbledore's command was followed immediately. "Mundungus, tell me exactly what happened."

The first version of "what happened", that Dung told, was interrupted by Snape who rolled his eyes and complained that the story would not fool a first year Gryffindor - he got a dirty look from everyone seated at the table, because they had all been residents of Gryffindor Tower during their time at Hogwarts.

The second version was closer to the truth - but Dung had left out the fact that he was off dealing in stolen goods. Dumbledore reminded him that he'd be talking to Arabella Figg later and Dung came clean. Harry was okay - but he'd had to conjure a Patronus in front of his cousin - and there had been some business transactions that had taken Dung away from his post.

Dumbledore conjured a quill and some parchment and to everyone's amazement he wrote and sealed the note and then cast the spell that turned the envelope Howler red.

"You're sending him a Howler?" Sirius and Remus both stood up looking unhappy.

"Calm yourselves. This is not for Harry. Arthur, and Sirius, will you please write to him and tell him to stay at Privet Drive and under no circumstances to give up his wand?" He handed the envelope to Fawkes who vanished with a crack. "I have to go to the Ministry. We will reconvene later."

Sirius and Remus were looking very angry, Molly and Arthur looked shocked and worried. Bill produced some parchment and quills for Sirius and his father.

Moody looked across the table at Snape. "This is all your fault, you bloody bastard. I should have killed you when I caught you."

"I wish you had." Snape leaned forward. "I'll never be able to make it right and you all think Potter is some sort of miracle child, when he is just a spoiled brat."

"James is dead, Snape. You got your revenge. Let it die." Moody said quietly. He did not want Sirius or Remus getting involved in this conversation, not now, not ever.

"I'll be going then." Moody stood up and left the kitchen, followed by Snape.

"Potter is just the same as his father. I can't let it die when he is still there-" Snape was ranting and paler than normal.

Moody turned and his magical eye stopped swiveling and stared straight into Snape's chest. "The boy isn't a ghost. He isn't haunting you. And he is not James. My leg aches and I'm going now."

Snape swept out of the room after Moody and stopped him before he reached the door. Moody didn't turn around - but Snape knew he was being eyeballed through the back of the older man's head.

"You are a disgrace and I don't know why my daughter ever married your father or had you. I'm ashamed that you carry my blood." Moody turned and faced Snape. "You are a disgrace Severus. I'll never accept you back. I don't care what Dumbledore says. You killed her, you killed my sweet girl."

Snape was cold with fury that radiated off him. "I did not kill my mother. I also did not abandon her like you did - when she married my father."

"Do you deny that she died of a broken heart when you got this?" Moody grabbed Snape's arm and ripped his sleeve back. "This is what killed her." He jabbed a crooked finger at shiny scarred patch of skin, the dark mark when it was not activated.

"Her heart was broken long before I was born." Snape moved away from Moody who was bearing down on him. "You know that. You broke it when you turned her out into the street, pregnant and unmarried. You rejected us."

The hatred between them was old and tough with scar tissue. Moody growled and stormed out the door. Alone in the hall, Snape closed his eyes and his nostrils flared white at the edges.
