Who: Severus Snape
What: Reviewing the evidence
When: GrownHP
Why: Because for right now, a quiet heart is safer then a loud one, and very soon he’s going to want to collect hearts?
Eventually Severus knows he’s going to have to stop and acknowledge what has happened, eventually he knows that what has gone down at Hogwarts will come crashing into his consciousness like waves and when that happens he’s going to think of Catherine, and his boys and Lily, and his staff, his Houses, and everything else. When it happens, Severus knows he’ll probably crumble under the weight of what has happened and forget to breath because the pain is too much.
Eventually he’s going to have to admit- at least to himself- that it is Sebastian’s blood that has painted the walls of Hogwarts. Eventually he’ll have to acknowledge that the Mark is burning black and angry. Eventually, he’ll have to meet his Lord and explain to him what has happened. Eventually. But not now.
Right now, Severus is more useful being quiet.
Lucius will have to know; the Malfoy Lord has done what he could to control the outside damage and when Matthias finds out about this- and of course he will find out about this- there’ll be no stopping him. That Owl is sent quietly, after the Head of Houses have reported in; slowly as the morning sun begins to creep over the horizon the facts come in. Heim is sent an Owl too, and Severus waits for that storm to break.
That is going to have to wait too, because right now, Severus is back to playing spy games. He shifts through the memories he took from Krum. He shifts through what he can see and read, from what he knows.
Wolf, followed Lupin, wolf got me.
Sebastian’s last words were about the wolf. The wolf Severus had sent him to follow. The wolf Severus wants to believe is innocent. The wolf he knows isn’t. The wolf who been given free reign in school and had spent that time clinging to the shadows…
Acting guilty.
Severus wants to ignore this, wants to believe there is a reason.
Because he was biding his time.
This makes no sense, why would he attack Sebastian before attacking Nikola?
Because Krum was next, and Sebastian was watching them both.
He is Deputy Headmaster and has been your friend for years.
So was Amycus.
The facts lay bare before him, spread out like a victim of the basement. Exposed. Broken. There is no emotion there. There is just the quiet beauty of the truth.
Quiet hearts, and men and screams.
Severus swears he can hear Bellatrix in his ear, laughing about his mask finally coming off. He thinks for a moment that this isn’t true. It can’t. There was a long hard battle that took him from the basement, and the mask and brought him here, to his school, to his family.
The family Remus has threatened. The school Remus has challenged.
Severus doesn’t want to believe it but eventually he knows; he’ll have to face it. He’ll have to consider all the facts and realize what has happened and it will come crashing down around him in waves. He may even have to collapse under the weight of the revelation. He did when Amycus painted Hogwarts Gryffindor red.
Severus glances at the cattle prod in the corner of his office and remembers once he killed his friend and mentor because the man had spilled blood in his school. Eventually and soon, Severus is going to collapse under the weight, the stress, and the anger. Eventually, it will come crashing around him in waves, burning black and painful like the Mark that tells him his Lord is demanding answers.
So is he…
Eventually, Severus may even fall back into what he does so well, and find the answers. It’s what he’s good at, after all, what he trained and cultured for. Eventually.
But right now he has to contact the family of the victim.
