Who? Amycus Carrow and Severus Snape
What? Severus is learning so fast that perhaps that is pride reflecting in Carrow's eyes.
When? During the first war.
Why? Because I owed Sev's mun one.
Author's notes: We'll put this at PG 13. It's mostly psychological and implied violence.

Amycus left the Dark Lord's chambers with a twinkle in his light blue eyes. Only men who truly enjoyed their work had the natural twinkle appear in their gaze. Albus Dumbledore and Amycus Carrow were not all that different after all; they both loved to teach. Their methods were just vastly different. Sometimes at least. Sometimes Amycus wasn't so sure that Dumbledore wasn't as ruthless with his methods as Amy was. He had to have earned that reputation somehow had he not?

"Come along, Lad, we have work to do," Amy informed Severus when he found the boy speaking with Avery, Wilkes, Crabbe and Goyle. "You too, Avery. We have a special job to do."

It wasn't that uncommon for Amycus to choose random wizards to accompany him when he was working. He usually selected younger ones to test out their stomach for the work that was required of him. So far only Severus proved useful long term. If only he could put his heart into it. He was holding back, but ah the potential there intrigued Amycus.

"You're fond of him," Alecto had said one night when they were sharing dinner together. There was the teasing tone that only she could get away with using on him. Little sisters. They could push buttons no one else were permitted to press.

"I'm not the only one." He gave her a pointed look. To her credit she simply sipped her wine. She was not going to discuss her personal affairs with her brother. He honestly had no interest in them anyway. He was simply letting her know that he realized Snape was becoming...familiar with both of them. They each had their own interest in him, sure, but he was slowly becoming accepted into the Carrow's affairs. That never happened before. Amy and Alecto preferred to keep people at an arm's distance.

The younger men fell into step with Amycus easy enough. He led them away until they were hidden in the forest behind the house they were using to meet. With a quick wave of his wand he turned a stick into a portkey and tossed it at Avery. Once he disappeared he said to Severus, "The basement."

He'd been there before. Severus would be able to apparate there. Amycus arrived seconds before Severus did, but those seconds were precious. Avery was in chains and struggling by the time Snape joined them.

"What is the meaning of this?" Avery demanded. Oh how this made Amycus smirk. The young were so stubborn and foolish at times. They still didn't get that they were to be used as the Dark Lord saw fit. He didn't want weak men walking among him.

"It's a lesson," Amy said as he lit a cigarette. He inhaled slowly. He worked on his own schedule after all.

"What have I done?"

"Nothing. It's not a lesson for you, Lad." The words came out whisper soft and comforting. Paternal. Amycus would alternate between that tone and his usual commanding tone throughout the evening. Always keep them guessing. Turning to smile at Severus he took in the controlled expressionless face of the younger man. He was learning so much, so quickly. Perhaps there was a flicker of pride in Amy's eyes as he set his gaze upon him. "It's for Severus."

"For me?"

"Indeed." He circled Severus slowly, watching him like a predator would keep track of prey. It was a move he had seen the werewolf use at times. A form of intimidation. Amycus was no wolf, but at times he could be a predatory animal.

It was part of his charm.

"Teaching strangers is easy. There is nothing invested there. If they die, they die. If they suffer, so be it. His will be done, isn't that right, Severus?"

"Indeed." A careful controlled response to the whisper soft words of his teacher. It's a shame Alecto was sitting this one out. She would be proud of how well Severus kept his emotions free of being discovered.

"A friend is different. A friend shares a common past with you. A friend has an emotional tie to you. A friend can be an asset or a weakness." He paused as he watched something flicker in Sev's eyes. He couldn't quite place what it was.

"Why do we break them down, Severus?"

"To make them talk, or to make them stronger."

"Which do you believe we are to do with Avery?" Avery was still struggling in the chains. The boy was too young, too stubborn and innocent to truly submit yet. He'd learn. Amycus and Severus would teach him.

"Both."

"You're a quick one, Lad," Amy crowed in delight as he stepped back and leaned against the wall to observe. "See if you can get him to speak the secret that The Dark Lord wishes to know before you break him, yes?"

"I have no secrets from my master. I will tell him anything he wishes to know," Avery pleaded as he looked up at his friend. Except he did not see a friend in the room. He saw a teacher and a student, and the student looked determined to succeed in his task.

The room would fill with screams and sobs soon enough. Blood would splatter, tears would spill, screams would echo off the wall, and all throughout the lesson the boy would remain convinced he had no secret of importance. He was right of course. He didn't. He'd been selected at random. The Dark Lord said choose anyone, it didn't matter. Any of the boys that Severus considered a friend would do.

Amycus had warned the boy from the start that this wasn't about him had he not? He was merely a book for his student to open up, read, and cast aside once the lesson was learned.

The twinkle remained in Amy's eyes throughout the night. He truly did love teaching the next generation.
