ancient, red-rotted blood

Later over tea and sympathy, and empty gestures, I wonder if maybe we were two minutes too late, or two hours.

and I tell myself by instinct that he is beside me

(I haven't seen my brother in three years) (I'll only be gone for awhile)

my trunk is packed

there's a jolt, a missing beat of blood somewhere, and I'm dizzy.

kissing him lightly on the neck as he turns away

He looked terrified and almost angry, one hand towards me slowly, outstretched waiting.

And God, he always was veiled, wasn't he, even when nobody saw it.

Indeed. One of those people who clings to life, and yet had so little of it. When I write Bellatrix, she wears fourteen years of Azkaban as a badge of honor, but for Sirius, it's just missing time.

I'm so glad you liked this. :)

I've read this before, and it's a pleasure to revisit! The disjointed format doesn't prevent it from being so very vivid, and it feels like an elegy, not only to Sirius, but to all of them - James, Regulus, Remus, Peter, even Bellatrix. Beautiful writing!

Oooh, this is just beautiful. I could quote phrases all day. The ending is particularly perfect, paralleling Sirius's eventual death.

"Which cousin?" I ask, watching as Sirius turns Flitwick's quill into a garden snake. This line brought a smile to my face--that's the operative question when it comes to this family, isn't it? ;)

The ending is what killed me about the original fic, and my goal was to find a way to get back to that same idea, with the same story and a different direction.

Heh, and it so is. I have some Blackcest meta (about how it seems to exist as a genre of its own, outside of boundaries of het, slash, femmeslash, gen) rattling around in my head somewhere, but no time to write it.

And omg missed you at Lumos. ♥
