Title: Maybe next year
Challenge: It only comes once a year
For: Sparkles
Ship: Bill/Remus
Warnings: slash

Smoothing the letter from Dumbledore that guaranteed he had a job the upcoming year, Remus carefully tucked it inside his suitcase and looked around the small room. The bright desert sun shined in, illuminating dust everywhere, but Remus didn't expect cleanliness in Egypt.

He'd toured the tombs all day yesterday; falling into bed exhausted. Today he didn't have any set plans, but hoped to visit the local museums. He'd bought the wizarding map, as well as the Muggle version, and sat at the tiny table in his rented room, eating toast while he marked which museums he planned to explore.

He'd dreamed of traveling for years, but without the funds - and a proper job - the Ministry wouldn't allow him. Dumbledore's offer to teach at Hogwarts thrilled Remus. His old headmaster told him that they needed to have a serious discussion, then handed Remus the parchment and an advance, and told him to take a vacation first.

Dressing carefully as a Muggle in jeans, a thin, long sleeve shirt and floppy hat, unsure which places he might visit, Remus set out with a bottle of water and his wand tucked inside a pocket.

The first stop was a Muggle store inside the closest museum. Fingering the papyrus that was for sale while grinning to himself, Remus didn't look up as a man bumped into him and mumbled an apology.

"That's not real papyrus, you know," the man said, stopping.

Remus nodded without looking at him; it was the same thing he'd bought in Diagon Alley, "I've seen this before, in London."

"So have I," he said. "However, if you like parchment, there some interesting stock in the next museum, something we can't find back home." He emphasized home and Remus glanced up, wondering if he might know him. Even as he didn't recognize him (Remus was glad for that), he appreciated the tanned skin and long, red hair.

For a moment, Remus had been afraid that it would be someone from the ministry checking up on him. Not that anyone working for the ministry would have a dragon tooth for an earring. Which quickly clarified that Remus was speaking with another wizard.

"If you're interested, I can show you. My name's Bill."

"Thank you, I'd love that. It's nice to meet you."

If he felt slighted that Remus didn't introduce himself, Bill didn't show it and Remus followed him through a back door and out the side of the museum.

"Do you work here?" he asked.

Bill nodded, "I work close by, which is how I know the shortcuts. How long are you in town?"

"Three more days."

"Traveling with anyone?" Bill asked, glancing slyly at him.

"No, I'm alone."

Bill grinned at him, openly admiring Remus. "If you like, I have today and tomorrow off. Sometimes it's more fun to stick with one of your own to tour. I can show you some fascinating things."

His heart stuttered for a moment at Bill's glance, there was no misinterpreting his remarks.

"I'm interested."

"Great."

Remus woke in the morning in his little rented room, stretching. Rolling onto his side, he smiled, blushing slightly at Bill.

"Good morning, Weatherby," Bill said, rubbing Remus' chest.

Remus had avoided giving his name so far and Bill had taken to calling him all sorts of silly things. It had become a bit of a game that both men seemed to enjoy.

Leaning in, Bill kissed Remus, his hand roaming lower and lower before settling. "Ready, Wilbur?" he asked with a wink.

Pushing his hips into Bill's grip, he nodded. "Yes."

They didn't speak as they began the day pleasantly. With a groan, Bill rolled off Remus and sighed.

"I suppose I can't convince you to return soon, that you're going to tell me that you only take vacations once a year."

More like once a lifetime, Remus thought, unsure what to say.

"Never mind," Bill said with a grin. He stood up, unashamedly naked, and kissed Remus' forehead. "I'll be in the shower, it's too small to suggest a joint one, which is a shame."

He had to return to work on Remus' last day, leaving Remus to meander around Egypt alone. They had agreed to meet for dinner at the same restaurant where they ate the two previous nights and all day Remus fiddled with a piece of parchment.

He was sure Bill was the eldest child of Molly and Arthur from several things he implied in their conversations. Which meant they were years apart in age. Remus couldn't decide what to do, to leave Egypt with only his memories, or give Bill the parchment that had his real name and address on it.

If given, it became an open invitation for Bill to visit him whenever he wanted. However, Remus knew it wouldn't be the same once Bill learned his secret. Yet it was a nice thought and Remus entertained it all day, not quite willing to dismiss the opportunity to see Bill again.

He glanced at the time, knowing he would be late to meet Bill if he didn't leave immediately. Still undecided what to do, Remus took the parchment with him, folded in his pocket, just in case.
