Hi, I'm newwwwww!!!

Hellooow. My name is Chels and I'm new to the community, and to knitting, but certainly not to Harry Potter. Anyway, I just have some questions I hope you guys can help me with.

I decided as my first project to do the Gryffindor POA Scarf from the atypically.knit pattern. Here's some of my questions:

1. I couldn't find any circular 16" needles with a small enough gauge, so I got a bamboo circ with size 10 needles. Do you guys think this will be too big? I also have a size 8, 29" circ, but I'm sure that will be way to long. Any suggestions?

2. I think I've got the hang of the whole knitting part, but I can't really figure out how to cast off on circular needles. I tried a little practice bit and after I pulled it off the needles, it sort of fell apart. I've been doing all my learning online, which might not be the best idea, but it's the best I can do.

3. Does anyone have a free pattern for a nice hat, or baby hat that's my level that I could try, maybe?

Thanks for your help, I'm all confuzzled.
