Title: Rethink Author: agonyatlas Rating: PG Word Count: 1100 Character(s): Zacharias Smith Warnings: Mentions of canon character death Author's Notes: Thanks to my beta. :)
I have a soft spot for Zacharias myself, and I really like how you've presented him here. He seems less harsh than he did in canon, which is good, because I think this is right. Harry and the Weasleys can be judgemental sometimes, there's nothing to say that Zacharias was a bad person. I like how you reasoned out his confusion and thought process on everything that happened. A really good character study!
I love Zacharias and I so enjoyed this story! I liked the stream of consciousness feel and how he's genuinely just trying to get at the truth. I like his interpretations of the events, because, yeah, the Gryffindors were kind of jerks to him and that would get my hackles up too. I liked that he's analyzing and trying to make things make sense, that he's broken up about Cedric, that he respects Dumbledore, that he's figuring out just how evil Umbridge is underneath that pink facade of sweetness, and that he's such a believable 15/16 year old boy. *hugs Zacharias* Beautiful job giving us insight into an often villainized character.
As a big Zacharias fan, I always appreciate a fic that shows us things from his point of view. ♥ I like how the inner monologue format of this scene highlights the one thing we objectively know of his personality in canon: he is a sceptic, and he is argumentative. I love that he tries to honestly weigh the arguments for and against Harry, and that he wants to figure out what's going on and what happened to Cedric - not because he is a rude snoop but because he's got a legitimate stake in the truth. Really, given Harry's claims, why would he - or anyone - be wrong to want to know?
I really enjoyed this. The books are only through Harry's eyes, and so everything we see in the books is completely Harry's viewpoint. Therefore when it comes to people he doesn't like, we're going to get a negative image of them.
Thankfully, you've provided us with a great look at Zacharias. He's logical and analytical, and as one of his housemates recently died and the only person present was Harry Potter, of course Zacharias is going to want to know the truth from the horses mouth.
This is a great look into Zacharias' thoughts. I admit I don't care for him much in canon, but this makes me think I might've been a bit harsh. Lovely job!
