Halloween is a holiday for the young.
In the Great Hall, students are drinking pumpkin juice, eating sweets, and watching the decorative bats swoop about. The professors are chatting, keeping a lazy eye on the mayhem. Their unwinding will take place later, in the staff room with elf-made wine.
Irma knows all this without being there. Decades of holidays at Hogwarts have laid a predictable path.
Instead of sharing in the merriment, she and Minerva are tucked away in the headmistress’s office. They’re enjoying a quiet drink together, using each other’s company for support while they remember the past separately.
Irma hates remembering the war, but her thoughts always turn to it this time of year. She and Aurora used to spend the night stargazing. Now her lover is buried behind the castle.
She can’t stand to look at the stars anymore.
In a way, though, she’s happier now than she was before. If Aurora hadn’t died during the battle, Irma would never have found her way to Minerva’s side. And Minerva wouldn’t have been available, if Amelia hadn’t been murdered.
Most nights, Irma doesn’t think about how or why they are together.
Halloween is the exception, and that’s why it’s a holiday for the young to enjoy.
