Gift for: nocturnus33, who wanted a fic that would do justice to Luna. I hope I managed to accomplish that to some extent. Yes, there are undertones of a pairing. Hopefully no one minds; I seem to be horribly allergic to true genfic. :)

“It’s best this way. The girl isn’t suited for Hogwarts after all.”
“But her mother wanted-would have wanted…”
Luna dances in the corner, her movements sinuous, graceful, but all they notice is that she is out of tune, out of step, out of synch. The faster the music, the slower she sways. Eyes shut, face serene, does she hear the whispers, feel the stares?
“Understood. But you must admit the girl isn’t flourishing in this environment. Have you considered another arrangement?”
The music stops, but she continues to dance.
“We only want what’s best for your daughter.”
“Let her be the judge..”
“She’s not capable of rational judgement-”
She stops, but the whispers never do.
“Loony Lovegood.”
This time, Harry Potter steps in and marches her away. “Why d’you let them treat you this way? Why don’t you stand up for yourself?”
“Stand up? To them? Why are they worth it?”
“Maybe then they’d give you some respect.”
“That wouldn’t mean anything. Their respect has nothing to do with me.”
“Why can’t you just care like everyone else?” He speaks as if these words were torn from him
“I do.”
“What?”
She covers her hand with his. “Care.”
