Moaning Myrtle hated being dead some days. She missed the ordinary and simple pleasures that eluded her in the spirit form. And this time of year was extremely difficult for the ghostly student.
It had been particularly vexing this term, listening to that strange blonde girl prattling endlessly to her younger classmates about the elaborately prepared sweets and the glowing pumpkins hovering everywhere.
On Halloween morning, Myrtle flew down the drainpipe and into the lake, hoping to escape the excited chatter about the upcoming feast in the great hall.
Early the next morning Myrtle returned to her washroom lair when she knew the students were asleep. She peered under the leftmost stall, curious to investigate the flickering light which pierced the darkness.
Gasping with delight, she swooped under the door and spun in a tight circle above the most wonderful display. One of Hagrid's gigantic orange pumpkins was perched above the circular wash basin, and flowing from the top to the floor was a ghostly buffet of pastry, ice cream and every imaginable confection.
As Myrtle sampled cream puffs and raspberry fool, and drank butterbeer right from the spigot, the smiling figure in stocking feet slipped out the door without detection.
