Hogwarts still went all out for Halloween. Headmistress McGonagall, it seemed, preferred to keep tradition alive. It made Kingsley smile - he remembered the Halloween feasts from when he'd been just a boy. The food, the decorations, the chill in the air and the red and gold of the leaves down in Hogsmeade…. Merlin, it felt like so long ago that he'd just been a big eyed little kid sitting there, staring at the pumpkins overhead.
Now he was Minister of Magic.
"How far we've come," he muttered, shaking his head.
"Hmm?"
"Just thinking about old times." Kingsley grinned and raised a toast to Minerva and winked. "Thanks for inviting me to drop by for this. I needed the break-paperwork's a pain."
"It doesn't do to dwell on the past." She nodded stiffly, but the corners of her lips twitched in a small smile.
"Not dwelling. Reminiscing. Think the Headmistress of Hogwarts can join the Minister of Magic for something a little stronger than pumpkin juice later?"
"For reminiscing?"
"For a holiday drink with a friend."
"I'll see what can be arranged."
Kingsley only nodded and looked out at the sea of faces, wondering how far these kids would go.
