A Surprise Gift
“What in the world are you doing?” challenged Severus Snape.
Remus Lupin looked up and grinned, then turned his attention back to the orange, slimy mess covering the table, the bench, and the floor around him.
Snape turned to move on, to swish his robes and retreat to the cool, dark dungeons he called home. But his failure to get a rise from Lupin annoyed him. He would have to try harder.
“I did not think your kind held grudges against pumpkins,” he drawled. “Or are you trying a new recipe, something that tastes better than the Wolfsbane potion?”
Lupin pushed a lock of hair back from his forehead, leaving a fatty orange streak across his pale skin. Snape grimaced.
“I’m having fun, Severus. You should try it sometime,” he said pleasantly and returned to his task.
Later that night, when Snape exited his rooms for his nightly patrol, he almost tripped on the pumpkin outside his door. He picked the monstrosity up and found himself smiling at the thin, hooked nose and beady eyes carved out of it. He turned and gently laid his pumpkin on the table in his room, then left to find some Gryffindors to terrorize.
