It was a rare occurrence that All Hallow’s Eve fell on an evening of the full moon. The magic was strong tonight, strong enough for even Muggles to feel, were they aware enough to pay attention to their surroundings rather than themselves for a change. Trees were whispering, the wind was singing its quiet song as nearly silent Samhain prayers filled the air…

The sisters had discovered the stone circle in the forest in Astoria’s first year at Hogwarts, when Daphne had suffered terrible heartbreak on Halloween day and run off to find solitude in a place no one would find her at, not realising that she was being followed. It had become their shelter for this most sacred night from then on, their safe haven from superficial celebrations, a place to recharge their powers and spirits.

They would barely speak, merely hold one another’s hands and breathe and chant ancient Celtic chants, inhaling the crisp autumn air that felt even fresher infused by moonlight…

The stones were glowing now, as they had never done before in the past years, and it must have been their strange, eerie radiance that attracted a little cat out of the blackness of the forest and into the light, a sweet, tiny thing with fur as black as the night and eyes just as blue as Daphne’s, that shyly stepped into their circle on shaky paws, becoming one of them as the clock in the Astronomy Tower struck midnight.

Astoria needn’t say a word, the sparkle in her eye was more than enough. Of course they would keep their new familiar, even if they were to hide her for another couple of weeks. But it was so very true, indeed… The magic was strong tonight, stronger perhaps than the sisters had at first assumed.
