Midnight had long passed as the feast came to an end. None of the houses’ heads had quite had the heart to send the students off to bed when the Great Hall was filled with such laughter - a rarity, nowadays.
Minerva McGonagall, however, had withdrawn early, not without strict glances towards the Gryffindor table, leaving the castle nearly in secret…
No one would look for her in the forest; a relieving thought, as much as she loved the children and valued her colleagues’ company.
But this night of Samhain was a sacred night, and since her husband’s passing she would insist on spending it in solitude, honouring the ancient rituals, all for herself and the Deities above.
He wasn’t here, Minerva reminded herself as she lit the candles, carefully placing the rosemary upon the altar. He was not here, had left this world entirely, and for him she was glad, yet… Yet it was in nights like these that he seemed so close, almost as though she could grasp him…
Prayers silently passed her lips, and as the wind caressed her cheek she could not help but smile a tearful smile. "It was good to see you, too, Elphinstone," she whispered, her voice breaking.
