Out of the darkness a cold wind blew icy needles of rain against her window. With a brisk movement, Minerva pulled thick curtains across the glass, shutting out the night. Turning away with a shiver, she paused to glance at the clock on her mantel. It was almost time.
Taking a deep breath, she settled herself in a chair and lit two tall candles in silver holders, placing them on either side of a small table. Gently, she opened a bundle of faded cloth and extracted an old and rather battered quill, which she carefully laid on the table between the candles, stroking the worn feather with a delicate touch. Then she took up her wand and watched the hands on her clock slowly count off the remaining few moments of the month.
At the stroke of midnight, she raised her wand, sketched a circle in the air between the flames, and silently recited the spell to part the veil and open a window into another world. The center of the circle began to blur and shift. Slowly, the smiling face of the quill’s former owner came into focus. Minerva returned the smile. “Hello, my dear, I’ve missed you.”
