Summary: Minerva can only hope that they haven't lost control.
Flickering light revealed a figure in the shadows, standing away from the bonfire. He was leaning against a tree, his robes fluttering. Minerva narrowed her eyes; she recognized Severus immediately. Part of her wished to approach him, stand before him and demand to know what on earth he was thinking. Part of her wanted to curse him, banish him from the night.
Of course it was all part of Dumbledore's plan, wasn't it? Keep the enemy close, let them think they had won. But Albus was dead.
She stared into the flames, letting her anger wash over her. Minerva took a deep breath, exhaling all her doubts and fury into the night. The Samhain bonfire was meant as a night of cleansing, an inferno which crackled and burned with all the energy of magic. It was a night of starting over.
Severus stood at a distance, dark and solitary, far removed from the rest of Hogwarts's staff, far removed from everything they stood for. Minerva felt as though she had lost control of the school she loved. She could only hope that the flames would cleanse Headmaster Snape, that he would ultimately choose the proper side.
She could only hope.
