Lavender wandered away from the cheerful bonfire; mug of hot, spiced apple cider in her hand. She was happy that Ron had found true love, even if it wasn't with her. However, Lavender couldn't help but feel a bit melancholy as Ron and Hermione celebrated with family and friends at the Burrow.
She walked far enough that the voices behind her were muted. Lavender paused at the edge of a field, studying the scarecrows positioned at either end. She felt like them sometimes, as if she were merely hanging around and waiting for something to happen.
"Fancy meeting you out here."
Lavender started, nearly dropping her mug. She whirled around to see who had spoken to her. "Charlie!" she gasped. "You gave me a fright."
"I didn't mean to scare you," Charlie said, by way of apology. "I simply cannot stand to see a pretty girl looking so sad and lonely."
A blush warmed Lavender's cheeks. To cover her embarrassed confusion, she said, "Shouldn't you be celebrating with your family?" Lavender held her ground when Charlie stepped closer.
"They're focused on Ron and Hermione, who only have eyes for each another," said Charlie. "I, however, only have eyes for you."
