Halloween was never a good time for Harry Potter. His first memory of it came when he was three. He pulled a white sheet over his head and went to tell the Dursleys he was dressing up as a ghost, only to find them gone and himself abandoned.
When he was ten, he was allowed to tag along with Dudley to a Halloween party, but before they could even make it in the door, Harry had his costume - Little Orphan Annie, because Petunia thought it was clever - ripped off and he was locked in a bedroom with another young boy who spent the whole time crying. Dudley laughed about it for months.
So when Harry opened the door to his house on Halloween night at the age of thirty-five, only to find Dudley on his doorstep, he had the urge to slam it. Instead he crossed his arms. “What are you doing here?”
Dudley held up a box of candied apples. “It’s a peace offering.”
“Why should I accept anything from you?”
“You shouldn’t. But I’m hoping you will anyway.”
“You try anything and you’ll live to regret it.”
“I know,” Dudley said.
Harry opened the door wider. Dudley stepped inside.
