PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING OR COMMENTING TO ANY TOPIC LISTS.
Guidelines and Formats for Posting and Contributing
An In-Progress Document.
MODIFIED 6 FEB 2005
A new topic will be announced by the moderator(s) each fortnight, on a Sunday/Monday.
The post will contain a brief description of the topic and its scope, and a few examples of fanon ideas about the topic. Where appropriate we'll link to the Harry Potter Lexicon for the canon version of events.
For one week, we'll ask you to add any fanon ideas they know of or have by commenting to the thread using the format below. If the ideas you wish to add do not fit into a comment, please feel free to make a separate post to the community, and link to the post in the comments.
(For example's sake, the current topic is "The Forbidden Forest")
In the Subject Line: Idea: [General descriptor]
e.g. Idea: Location of secret dragon preserve.
In the Message:
A header, outlining:
- Idea. [General descriptor]
- Idea belongs to: poster/[name of other author, plus fic title and hyperlink to fic INCLUDING RATING]
Description of idea, including references to fic or other links, and how the idea is related to canon (if at all) where appropriate. Can be as brief or as lengthy as you wish depending if it is a new idea or one already existing in fic/artwork. If you (the poster) came up with this idea and are happy for others to borrow it, please indicate in the post.
For example:
Idea: Location of secret dragon preserve.
Idea belongs to: poster
lapin_agile.
... followed by a description of said dragon preserve, any canon evidence for it, that the poster is fine (or not) with people borrowing this idea, if it has appeared in fic or not, and maybe if other authors have done anything similar.
At the end of the week, all links and ideas will be collated in an index post, which will be then open for discussion and debate. Please save your discussion points for this indexed post!
Periodically, the index posts will be put on a website, and will be gathered in the Memories. ANY PERMISSIONS GRANTED BY AUTHORS WILL BE INCLUDED.
PLEASE LEAVE ANY REQUESTS FOR PERMISSION TO THE DISCRETION OF THE TOPIC MODERATORS(S).
What if I have an idea I want to share but it doesn't relate to the current topic?
Make a post to the community using the format below, making sure you include your email address. All new posts are moderated, so the moderator(s) may decide to keep your suggestion back if it'll relate to an upcoming topic and post it when appropriate (that's what the email address is for!). If that's not the case, it'll enter the community as an OFF-TOPIC IDEA, and will be indexed under Miscellaneous.
What if I want to suggest a new topic?
Suggestions for new topics can be emailed to flexicon@gmail.com OR by adding a comment to the Master List of Topics.
We will endeavour to present some sort of schedule of future topics as much as possible.
What about art or other graphic ideas?
Please follow the guidelines above but indicate via a note in the header that you are linking to image files (and of course their RATING). IMPORTANTLY, please email artists/archives and ASK permission to link to images--we do not want to be responsible for exceeding bandwidth!
What if I want to use an idea in a fic?
If permission is given:
There would still be an absolute onus on any writer to CREDIT the originator of ANY idea. We don't want to see this as a forum for the plagiarism of ideas without permission. The inclusion of an idea in hp_flexicon is by no way an excuse to disregard respect for the ideas of others.
If not:
If the topic posts do not indicate any permission to use the idea, and you wish to borrow an idea for a fic please proceed as you would privately, by emailing the author.
If permission has not been given for this forum, PLEASE DO NOT ASK ON BEHALF of
hp_flexicon. Thank you :-).
