A/N: These are drabbles in a series that I've started working on today. I doubt I'll come anywhere near finishing it today, so you can look for the rest of them in my journal later on.

The Effects of Love on Boys Who Live

Part One. (Insomnia)

There is work, of course. But can he call it “work?” It doesn’t feel like work, yet. There is still the newness and the excitement of the unexpected, and it makes him giddy in ways he had never considered. It was one thing to fly as a Seeker for Puddlemere United - it is another thing entirely to own the team outright. Buying the team had seemed a very reckless thing to do, something very Gryffindor in nature that his father or his godfather might have done. There is, however, an additional element, something for which he had never been properly prepared, because the Sorting Hat had taken orders from an eleven-year old boy and not placed him in Slytherin.

Power. Control. Authority. They are more fun than he had imagined, and they help to keep him up at night.

And then there are his godchildren, a set of twin girls born to Ron and Hermione four years ago. Because of Harry, they both already have tiny brooms and tot-sized quaffles, bludgers, snitches and bats, with which they drive their mother mad. Harry thinks it is only fair, because he knows that the girls have a lifetime of study schedules, homework planners, and activism ahead of them. Ron’s been practically emasculated by his marriage, (but who hadn’t seen that coming?), so Harry figures it is up to him to keep a sense of fun in the girls’ lives. It’s the sort of thing Sirius had wanted to do for him.

Harry sits up late sometimes and thinks about what sort of Animagi the twins might become one day.

Then, naturally, there is a boy. Well, a man, technically, but since Harry still thinks of himself as a boy, he can only think of Colin as the same. Harry spends a lot of time thinking about the brightness of Colin’s eyes and his smile, and what a contrast they are to the darkness their world had known when they were younger. Voldemort would have had a world where a person like Colin wasn’t welcome. Now, whenever Harry touches Colin’s skin, when Colin melts into him as they kiss, when they lie next to one another in the darkness, panting and sated, Harry is very glad that he had been willing to commit murder. Loving Colin gives him freedom from regret.

Those are the nights that Harry sleeps soundly.

Part Two (Blush)

Colin’s father doesn’t take the news very well at all. His boys are all he has, and having one married and gone is fine. However, having his oldest boy not married, but simply leaving their home to live romantically with another man, seemed very cruel. Yes, very cruel, indeed. He had given both of his boys over to the wizarding world, and proudly so, and this was how he was to be repaid?

Harry is annoyed by Mr. Creevey’s intolerance, and finds it ironic, certainly. It wouldn’t really bother him anymore than that if it wasn’t for how deeply hurt Colin seemed to be. Colin doesn’t smile as much as he did before, and that makes Harry angry. When Colin comes home in tears one afternoon from visiting his father, Harry fights with his whole being not to pay the man a visit of his own, for the sole purpose of teaching Colin’s father the Latin words for “always cutting.”

“I hate seeing you like this,” Harry whispers to Colin as he holds him. “I’m tempted to introduce him to the Cruciatus.”

Colin shakes his head just a little, not lifting it from Harry’s chest. “That’s an Unforgivable - and he’s still my dad.”

“Well, what he’s doing is unforgivable, I think,” Harry continues, stroking Colin’s soft, brown hair. “And I don’t care who he is. He isn’t allowed to keep hurting you. In case you haven’t noticed, I’m protective of the people that I love.”

Harry feels the heat from Colin’s cheek on his chest as he blushes. Colin slowly lifts his head and Harry is greatly relieved to see the smile he recognizes.

“Really, Harry? Because I love you, too! I’ve been wanting to tell you, because we always say everything else, you know? I think you must have said that you liked me or that you cared for me at least eight times yesterday, and the day you asked me to move in with you, I think your word was ‘fond.’ I thought you might have meant to say you loved me, but you’re kind of shy when it you talk about feelings. You’re more about action, aren’t you, Harry? Which is alright, of course, but mmmph…”

A kiss works every time, Harry thinks, grinning inwardly. Of course, with the admission from both of them, he knows he is blushing, too.
