"So let me get this straight," Jongin asks before he takes a seat at the dinner table beside Chanyeol, "Byun asked you out and you said yes?"

"Well, I guess you could call it that." Chanyeol replies with a shrug of his shoulders, looking over the array of food that cover the surface of the table, he eventually piles a large helping of mashed potatoes on his plate and rice, "It wasn't a big deal, really."

Jongin looks at Chanyeol likes he has suddenly sprouted a second head. Chanyeol pointedly ignores him and begins to eat. Okay, so maybe it was a big deal that he was dating Byun Baekhyun. Jongin begins to pile food onto his own plate and Chanyeol appreciates the silence for once.

“I’m telling you, there’s something not quite right about that Byun kid,” Jongin says, breaking the blissful silence once more.

"Isn’t Byun that Ravenclaw who stole and kept a baby mandragora root for a pet a couple of years ago?” Sehun asks as he takes his seat on the other side of the Gryffindor house table across from the two.

Chanyeol thinks back to his second year at Hogwarts. A rumor had spread around the castle about how the teachers suspected that a student supposedly taken a mandragora root. No one had believed the rumors to be true until one day when a cat had the misfortune to accidently knocked over the fern plant that the root was not so cleverly hidden in.

Fortunately, the root was only a baby and the cries it emitted after exposed only caused all students who were in Ravenclaw common room to pass clean out. Jongdae, to this day, still claims that his left ear has not been the same since the incident, though.

“It was never proven that it was him,” Chanyeol replies, his mouth full of mashed potatoes even though it’s a very well-known fact around the castle that the student was indeed Byun Baekhyun.

"Wither it was proven or not, I highly doubt that a person who decides to keep a mandragora root for a pet because and I quote ‘they’re really cute’ can be considered harmless. Nor the friends he hangs out with." Sehun picks up a flask of pumpkin juice and takes a drink, “I’d hate to admit it, but Jongin is right. You should be careful.”

“If an ugly ol wrinkly root is what Byun's definition of cute is,” Jongin says as he picks up a rather large turkey leg, “then I’d like to know what he thinks is appealing about Chanyeol."

"Shut up," Chanyeol smacks Jongin upside the head. It would be a lie to say he hasn’t wondered about that question before, but he feels that it’s better off not knowing.

And okay, so for as long as Chanyeol can remember, Baekhyun has always been a tad bit odd. Even he has to admit but… Chanyeol looks over toward Ravenclaw table where Baekhyun is talking animatedly to his best friend Kyungsoo, pausing only to take a bite out of a raw turnip in between sentences.

Kyungsoo nods occasionally, though it’s evident that his interests are in turning the loaf of bread that sits on the table into various creepy crawlers and back again. Kyungsoo also seems to get a particular kick out turning the bread into hideously ugly magic creatures that probably live in the deep depths of Great Lake. Baekhyun doesn’t seem to mind, and it even gives Chanyeol the creeps to watch him reach out and pet one of the disgusting withering creatures.

Jongin follows his gaze and shivers at the sight. He quickly puts down the last bits of his turkey leg and pushes the plate away while muttering something about the creepy club and why on earth is Byun eating a turnip raw.

“Back to what I was trying to say before you two so kindly gave me your words of concern-which I’m going to ignore,” Chanyeol pauses for the drawn out effect before he continues, “Baekhyun invited me to spend Christmas break with him and his family. And I said yes."
A brief flicker of surprise appears on Sehun’s face and a look of horror surfaces onto Jongin’s face. But before either of the two Gryffindor boys can voice concerns, their conversation is interrupted by echoing sounds of laughter.

Looking toward the source of the laughter, they turn their attention towards Ravenclaw table. It would be Jongdae’s obnoxious laughter that attracted their attention, and Baekhyun is too busy laughing to even notice the stares, but what’s surprising to see is that even Do Kyungsoo is actually snickering.

"What are they laughing at?" Jongin asks, frowning as he tries to peer over the heads of other students.

Gryffindor’s prefect Joonmyun, who happened to be passing by their section of the table when he overhears Jongin’s question, pauses to explain.

“I don’t know if you were paying attention but Kyungsoo was enchanting a loaf of bread, and well...” Joonmyun glances toward the table where the other three boys are still laughing uncontrollably, “It appears that the loaf-The fish, really-- in its enchanted form flopped into a soup bowl of another student.”

“So?” Chanyeol asks, “What’s so funny about a fish landing in a bowl of soup?”

“Let’s just say it was a whale provided oppor-tuna-ity.” Joonmyun replies, he then sighs loudly.

Sehun, Chanyeol, and Jongin stare at him, confusion written clearly all over their faces. Joonmyun closes his eyes, takes a deep breath in, and then reopens his eyes.

“I’m not trying to be koi, so I’ll give you time to mullet over.” Joonmyun speaks slowly, waiting for them to get it.

“They’re making fish puns, you fools.” Joonmyun says coldly before he stalks off over to where Baekhyun is now choking on a piece of turnip due to laughing to hard.

Chanyeol bursts into a fit of laughter so strong that he almost chokes on his own mouthful of food and it takes him the better of five minutes to get himself together.

"At first I was concerned about Chanyeol spending the holiday break with Baekhyun, but now...” Sehun takes another sip of his drink, “I’m pretty sure he is going to be just fine.”

"Baekhyun isn't loony you guys he's just... misunderstood." Chanyeol says, choosing to ignore Sehun's statement and instead focuses on what he had implied about being worried. Though he can’t help a small chuckle every time he thinks about the terrible puns.

Sehun merely tilts his head to the side as a response, raises his glass to Chanyeol, and then downs the last of his pumpkin juice. Jongin doesn't argue and doesn’t need to, it’s clear by his expression that he does not agree, either.

Chanyeol frowns at the both of them, "It's true."

"Soooo Sehun, you never gave me an answer. What are you doing during the break and are you going to spend the Christmas holiday with me?” Jongin changes the subject, crosses his arms, and then leans on the table.

"I’m not sure because I’ve gotten behind on my studies--“

Chanyeol snickers and Sehun gives him a pointed look.

“It’s true, so I’m thinking about sticking around the castle. There are a few books I want to read and--"

"Oh that’s nice. I mean it’s not like we don’t spend every winter together since we’ve been friends or anything. Hope you have fun and Merry Christmas to you too." Jongin gives a tight-lipped smile before standing, and walks away with brisk steps.

“He’s so dramatic sometimes,” Sehun says before he stands and goes after Jongin.

Chanyeol cannot help but to feel amused by the both of them as he gets up and shouts, “If there’s anything I can do, please don’t hesitate to let minnow.”

Baekhyun’s house actually reminds him of a good combination of Sehun’s flawless and richness of a home, and Jongin’s comfy, warm, and always welcoming home. Which comes as a big surprise to Chanyeol considering he was expecting something along the lines of cheesy horror film décor, especially considering Baekhyun’s fondness of all things strange, dark, and horror settings-such as the school dungeons. I guess there really was something to day about having teachers for parents he supposes. The only noticeable difference is the fact that Baekhyun’s house did not have a private library.

“So where's your bedroom?" Chanyeol asks. As much as he’d like to know the in and outs of Baekhyun’s older brothers room, he had other interests on his mind. Baekhyun’s parents were out shopping, and they were all alone but he can hear Baekhyun laugh at him, upper half of his body hidden by the skirt of the bed. He nudges his boyfriend’s leg with his foot.

“I wonder where he’s gone?” Baekhyun says, reappearing from underneath the bed, and brushes the dust off his sweater before he shoves Chanyeol playfully into the hallway and into his own room.

The only thing that is slightly out of the ordinary is the table in corner of Baekhyun’s room that’s covered in a purple table cloth. The cloth is embroidered with silver and gold stars and astrology signs, and on top of the table rests a stack of cards. It’s not all that strange considering they are wizards. He'll have to get Baekhyun to practice what he’s learned in divination class later, but for now...

"Chanyeol, w-what are you doing?" Baekhyun questions in a breathy tone of voice as Chanyeol pushes him against the wall and begins to pepper his neck with soft kisses. Chanyeol nibbles the underside of his jaw as a response. Baekhyun's breath hitches slightly as his fingers slide up Chanyeol’s arms to grip his shoulders, his eyes flutter shut.

Chanyeol can’t help but to think that he would gladly die right now if heaven meant that he’d get to listen to Baekhyun make these soft sounds every day. And he does die a little when he hears a voice.

"That really isn’t appropriate.”

Chanyeol jumps away from Baekhyun and then turns to stare wide-eyed at Kyungsoo. Kyungsoo stares at him in a way that's more than murderous and the large bag he’s carrying on his back that’s almost the size he is does nothing to help soothe his nerves, or make him feel less intimidated.

"What are you doing here, Do?" Chanyeol finally manages to speak after taking a large breath, hating the fact that he honestly cannot tell if his heart is beating rapidly because of the intimate moment he’s just had with Baekhyun or because he's just that fucking terrified of Kyungsoo. He prefers to think it's the first option.

"I always come," is Kyungsoo's short reply, he blinks before turning to Baekhyun who smiles at him. "You’re out of soda crackers.” Kyungsoo says.

"My parents are out they'll bring some back." This answer seems to satisfy Kyungsoo and he turns away, going back into the room across the hall. Chanyeol sees a glimpse of the room before the door shuts. Black walls, black curtains, bed sheets. Everything is black and then the door closes, but not before he catches sight of Kyungsoo who gives him another dirty look.

"Why didn't you tell me that you invited Kyungsoo?" Chanyeol lowers his voice to a whisper.

"I wasn't aware that I had to have your permission to invite my best friends over to my own house." Baekhyun retorts, "Jongdae is coming too."

Chanyeol looks at him, slightly horrified. Baekhyun merely shrugs before he pulls Chanyeol by the shirt, and kicks the door shut behind him.

“So where were we?" he asks, pulling Chanyeol backwards onto the bed with him. Chanyeol instantly forgets about Kyungsoo and focuses on the way Baekhyun kisses him instead or almost does.

“So anyway how was your break? Break any bones?” Jongin asks. He nudges Sehun roughly in the arm.

“Don’t-- I’m never going on vacation with you again. I should have stayed in the castle like I originally planned and I would have never of broken my arm. It still hurts, just so you know.” Sehun complains while they walk and Chanyeol sighs.

Besides the fact that he was cocked blocked by the damn nifler (turns out that was what Baekhyun had been searching for in his brother’s room prior) choosing to show itself by ripping a large gaping hole into Chanyeol’s bag. And the daily task of avoiding Kyungsoo and Jongdae. (both of which he caught late one night when he had risen from his slumber for a glass of water, in the kitchen stirring something in a large cauldron at the fire. He didn’t ask and Jongdae nor Kyungsoo didn’t specify.) He’d say that the holiday went fairly well.

“Well I didn’t break any bones, but Jongdae almost did.” Chanyeol says, rubbing gloved hands together to warm them from the bitter cold in the courtyard. Almost was an understatement considering how long Jongdae had wailed about his arm hurting until they offered to take him to the bone shop down the street. He shut up rather nicely after that. Sehun and Jongin both turn to look at him.

“What? He slipped on a patch of ice in Knockturn Ally.” Chanyeol explains.

“Why were you in Knockturn Ally?” Sehun is the first to ask. Jongin nods.

“Kyungsoo dragged us into Knockturn Alley because he was looking for dragon gizzards or something like that. I don’t know, I wasn’t all that interested.” Chanyeol replies, “We also went into some shop that sells bones?”

“It almost sounds likes he’s brewing a potion...” Sehun mutters as they re-enter the castle.

“Nah, he just collects bones and dead things. He’s weird like that.” Chanyeol says.

"That’s... interesting." Sehun says in a bored tone of voice and then pauses "Wait... why did you guys go into a shop that sells bones, then if he’s not brewing a potion?"

"Kyungsoo wanted to buy a Skull to decorate his dorm headboard." Chanyeol says as if this was a very normal everyday thing to do. Sehun’s permanent frown only deepens and Jongin mouths the words, "I told you he'd fit right in" to Sehun behind Chanyeol’s back.
“I’m guessing the holiday went well?” Sehun asks, pointedly ignoring Jongin. Chanyeol doesn’t answer right away.

He can’t help but to feel slightly disappointed by the fact that aside from Baekhyun’s house being fairly normal he hasn’t found actual evidence that would prove his theory that Baekhyun was not some castle odd ball and that Sehun and Jongin (and pretty much everyone else in the castle) where just prawns-- prudes, he totally meant prudes.

His self-proposed mission of proving his friends wrong is more difficult than he initially thought it would have been. Just this past break his time with Baekhyun was divided between taking long romantic strolls down Knockturn Alley. The signs advertising authentic human bones and jars of eyes suspended in greenish goo really set the mood- not, Make-out sessions while listening to late night horror radio shows. Chanyeol can’t remember the themes, but he does remember a line about a lover exploding into a nebula and creating a black hole sounded romantic enough until the nebula turned into a black hole and destroyed everything within its reach. In addition, even a few nights that involved brewing potions from books that he’s more than positive haven’t been checked out in minimal of 90 years.

“It was alright.”

But he’s not going to give up that easily.
