“The Council calls upon Park Chanyeol on appeal for his crimes against magic. Mr. Park, should you agree to the terms, the Council is prepared to renounce your sentence in favor of the appeal. Do you accept?”

Under hooded eyes, Chanyeol peered through the holes of the cage at the Council members seated in front of him. He watched as a few of the audience members tensed from his intense stare. He gave a slight smirk, “I do, sir.”

“The convict’s previous ruling was on the basis of using illegal magic to steal the identity of deceased wizard, Albus Dumbledore. In addition, the convict took part in the capture of the Phoenix, Fawkes in order to aid this venture. The punishment for such crimes involves life imprisonment in Azkaban. Does the convict concede?”

A shadow of the smirk remains on his face, “Yes, sir.”

“In light of the situation, however, the Council is prepared to offer a choice to lessen the sentence. The convicted will be allowed a 24 hour period to deliberate, but if a decision is not made, the Council will make the choice instead. Do you understand?”

Chanyeol mentally scoffs, “Yes. Sir.”

“Park Chanyeol, you may choose to live the remainder of your lifetime in Azkaban prison, on account of your crimes,” the official said. “Or, as the Council believes you have potential to be an important asset to the Ministry, you may repent for your crimes by changing your ways under good influence.”

“Change my ways?” Chanyeol scoffs for real. “Exactly what do you mean by that?”

“The Council believes if you were to spend your time with an influential wizard, you may be compelled to seek a different route. Perhaps in aiding the Ministry to fight the Dark Side.”

Chanyeol laughed. “I apologize, I’m just having trouble understanding you. You actually think I’ll become good and join your little bad guy fight club?”

The officer smirked this time, “It’s a choice, Mr. Park. You always have the option of just going to Azkaban for the rest of your life.”

Chanyeol’s incredulous look switched to a murderous glare.

“Besides, should you take this route, you’ll be placed in the hands of a very influential wizard; one whose voice is most valuable, especially in front of the Council. It may do you well to accept this offer.”

Chanyeol knew this was a rather generous offer, considering his crimes. But he, a growing dark wizard who has spent most of his life tucked away in isolation in derision for the human race, had a personal mission. And while now it has been foiled, he cannot allow his efforts to be in vain. On the other hand, he cannot fathom living the rest of his life in Azkaban. A frustrating compromise. Chanyeol snarled, hitting the side of the cage in anger. The Ministry official gave a knowing look, which only fueled his emotions.

“Fine,” Chanyeol said in a nasty tone. “I’ll accept your offer.

Kyungsoo stared at his books, trying to make sense of the words on the page. He deemed his efforts to study futile and pushed them away. The sky was an ominous shade of grey; even his tea leaves this morning left a cautious omen. Not that Kyungsoo was very superstitious. But he’s never been wrong about the signs.

Being an auror-in-training has given Kyungsoo access to knowledge he’d never learnt while at Hogwarts. However, it’s an interesting trait that he possesses; the ability to sense when something is about to go awry.

The Ministry said that’s the reason why they sought him out in his sixth year to become an Auror. Of course, Kyungsoo knew better. He comes from a prestigious lineage, the Potter family. His grandmother married a Korean, which explains his last name but everyone can see the resemblance. Greatness runs in his family. Even his father was a well-known Auror who helped put down the dementors in the last decade when they rebelled against the government.

Kyungsoo doesn’t think he’s very great. While he was at Hogwarts, everyone desired to be his friend; mostly so they could go home and brag to their parents about how they’re friends with a Potter. In reality, Kyungsoo only made a handful of friends who all found jobs within the Ministry. He hardly contacted them though, usually the formers having to seek him out first. Sometimes he passed by the Department of Magical Creatures and Jongin would call out his name twice, maybe thrice before Kyungsoo would turn back with a timid wave.

It wasn’t that he disliked his friends; they all had some great times at Hogwarts. He remembered how Baekhyun would always drag him out to Hogsmeade during exams week and they’d buy trunkfuls of candy that the gang would share past curfew. Jongdae would try to coax him into breaking out the infamous Invisibility Cloak that’s been passed down through his family, so they could sneak out to the Forbidden Forest. He’d only indulged him once.

The truth is, even though the whole wizarding world knows about his great-great-grandfather, Harry Potter’s grand escapades into saving the world from Voldemort, and even after that every other Potter would have a great accomplishment to their name, Kyungsoo has only ever felt...average. He doesn’t see greatness in his stars. His mother used to always try and convince him that he had potential, and that he just hasn’t seen it yet, but even her soft words never made much of an impact on him.

In the end, he decided to move away from his family to at least try and find a place for himself in the real world. Having the Ministry’s good graces on his shoulder definitely had its perks, although Kyungsoo would rather do without the favoritism.

A sudden tapping sound came from his kitchen window. He recognized the owl as a Ministry courier and immediately removed the rolled parchment from its claws. The familiar seal glowed brightly as Kyungsoo held the letter in his hands, unravelling it carefully and deliberately. He read the letter, written in its usual cursive style:

Dear Mr. Kyungsoo Do,
The Ministry of Magic humbly requests your presence in front of the Wizard Council. An important order has come up and requires your immediate consideration. Please respond to this letter by Owl in no more than two days.

We thank you for your continued support,
The Ministry of Magic.

Kyungsoo wondered what the Ministry could possibly want from him this time. He knew the Ministry gave him special attention because of his family’s reputation; as if that even mattered anymore. They often sent him letters asking his “professional opinion” on various legal matters; he’d always respond by saying that he’s still in training so his opinion could be anything but professional.

In the end, Kyungsoo doesn’t have the willpower to refuse any favors from the Ministry. Besides, receiving favors has done him well. What harm can one more do?

Pushing open the gilded doors to the Council room, Kyungsoo took a tentative step toward the assembled group of men. He felt a sudden overwhelming pressure from being in their intimidating presence.

“Ah, Mr. Do. Welcome,” the head councilman said. “Please, take a seat.”

Kyungsoo made his way to the witness position, across the room facing the Council directly.

“Mr. Do, we’ve called you here today to take up a very important mission. We believe you are the best candidate for such a task, should you choose to accept it,” the councilman said.

Kyungsoo gulped nervously, but nodded in agreement.

“We have a very...special prisoner from Azkaban. He’s been on our radar for years and we have finally caught him. He is a very powerful wizard, but we believe his potential still unearthed.” At that moment, the center of the room began to shake and floor opened up to reveal a rising platform with a cage-like mechanism appearing. In it, a brooding man stood, his hands bound in front of him, long black hair covering his face like a curtain.

Eyes widening, Kyungsoo looked questioningly at the Council, “This is Chanyeol Park, a descendant of some unknown Death Eaters from the time of Voldemort. He was originally thought to be part of the cult that seeks to revive the Dark Mark, but now we think he may be different.”

A scoffing sound came from the cage; Kyungsoo eyed it cautiously.
“The point of you being here Mr. Do, is that we believe you have the ability to unleash this wizard’s hidden potential, so that he may be an indispensable value to us.

Kyungsoo didn’t know what to think. “I-I don’t quite understand. Why me?”

The councilman gave a wry smile, “Despite what you may think, you are very influential in the Ministry. Although you are still in training, you have an important position amongst the other Aurors. We could think of no other candidates better than yourself.”

Fingers trembling, a million thoughts raced through Kyungsoo’s mind. He glanced at the figure in the cage again; he could practically feel the dark magic emanating from his aura. How was he supposed to get through to this man, let alone try and change him?

“I-I think you’re mistaken, Councilman. I’m hardly in any position to take on such a task. After all, wouldn’t a more experienced Auror be better?”

“Perhaps we can tempt you with something more, Mr. Do. If you successfully complete this mission, we will automatically instate you as an official Auror.”

The man in the cage raised his head, hooded eyes casting an intense glare towards Kyungsoo. He didn’t know if this was worth it, if even being an auror was worth it, and he was scared.

The council looked at Kyungsoo expectantly. He really didn’t have much choice. Besides, what kind of reputation would he be upholding if he refused the Ministry’s favor?

“Al-alright then. I will accept this duty.” Kyungsoo said. The councilman smiled. “Excellent, I’m glad you have accepted, Mr. Do. Prepare the prisoner.”

The last thing Kyungsoo sees before the prisoner is taken back is the slight shadow of a smirk.

A few days later, Chanyeol found his cell door opening to two guards, efficiently handcuffing and leading him away from the island. He was violently shoved in the back of a large van, the doors closing to complete darkness.

Chanyeol thought of the small man, the one who will be housing him in the Ministry’s futile attempt to turn him into a playtoy. The poor thing was probably more scared of his shadow, how was such a weak thing a Potter? He mentally scoffed. That boy was no more of a threat than a horsefly.

The van lurched to a stop, and just as quickly as he was put in he was brought out, to a small hovel in a quiet area. The front door was ajar and wide eyes were peeking through the crack. Chanyeol felt his lips rise into a smirk, and watched in sick satisfaction as the man darted away again.

Perhaps he was not a threat, but this would certainly not be dull.

When the Ministry officials brought Mr. Park to his house, Kyungsoo didn’t really know what to expect from the brooding man. His head was still lowered, long, stringent hair creating a curtain over his face, but a permanent smirk was etched on his chapped lips.

Kyungsoo was more unsettled than he let on, but he felt a strange determination as well to try and get through to the dark wizard. After all, his mission was to try and change his ways.

The Aurors placed a special charm on Mr. Park so that he would be unable to leave the house, as well as a Tracking Charm so that the Ministry can keep a special watch.

They told Kyungsoo that they will be making repeated visits every so often for progress checks, as well as written ones on a bi-monthly basis. With a dubious wish of farewell, they were gone, leaving Kyungsoo with the other wizard.

Before the moment could devolve into an awkward silence, Kyungsoo offered to show the man his new living space. A small room in the attic was set up as the only open area where the other wizard could sleep.

“Um, here is where you’ll be staying. It’s rather small but I hope you don’t mind…”

Mr. Park tossed his clothing sack in a random corner before throwing himself on the small cot in the far side of the room. He says nothing after that.

Kyungsoo stands awkwardly at the edge of the doorway, unsure of what to do now in this situation. He wants to just leave the man to his thoughts, but at the same time doesn’t quite know if that’s a good idea.

In the end, he decides to leave him alone, “You probably must be tired...I’ll come back later with some food.”

He returned three hours later to find Chanyeol in the exact same position as he left him. Cautiously, he approached him, setting aside the tray of food in his hands. He hesitated trying to shake him, but tentatively placed a hand on his shoulder.

The wizard suddenly jumped up from his position, recoiling as if the touch had burned him. A low growl came from his throat and Kyungsoo backed away immediately.

"I-I'm sorry! I thought you were asleep and I brought food for you and --"

"Get out," Chanyeol rumbled. "Now."

Kyungsoo squeaked and quickly made his way out of the room. Each moment getting to know this man was more frightening than the last. Kyungsoo honestly had no idea how the situation would turn out. But he suddenly had a new resolve to try and get through to the Dark Wizard. Although he can't figure out the reason why, he knows he can't fail this mission. One way or another, Chanyeol Park was now his responsibility.
