I have been trying to com up with ways and reasons for Dumbledore to place such vehement and unwavering trust in Severus Snape. Even though Dumbledore and Rowling herself have said he has made several mistakes, it would be very hard for me to believe he would keep an ex Death Eater so close and so into his plans without having very concrete proof of reform. Dumbledore may have been vulnerable to emotionality and a lot of other thing but he wasn’t stupid. You just don’t trust the minions of the Dark Lord when they say they feel bad.
People have thrown around the possibility of an unbreakable vow being made between Dumbledore and Snape. This is plausible but I doubt it happened. This would be an overuse of something introduced too late in the books. It has served its purpose as far as Snape is concerned.
There is one more element introduced very early on in her books that I believe will come back. After all, Rowling just don’t drop things (like veritaserum, time turners, and possibly Felix Felicis). The Mirror of Erised is a perfectly plausible way to validate Severus Snape’s true intentions. The mirror doesn’t lie.
What could have been seen in the mirror is a completely different topic. Maybe he saw himself without his mark. Maybe it was all the people he had killed or seen killed back to life (but remember this is before the fall of the DL so Lilly and co. would still be intact). Who knows. I am not about to guess with any certainty because if I am right about the mirror, we will probably find out in the seventh book.
The one thing I am almost certain on is that the Mirror of Erised isn’t done.
Now, go! Poke holes in my theory! Oh yeah, and if someone has already posted bout this, tell me beause I missed it. :/
