Why Severus Snape Cast a Real Avada Kedavra on the Tower and Why It Wasn’t Murder

Aug 06, 2006 11:36

How I reconcile the death of Albus Dumbledore with Severus Snape's loyalty to him.

Note: On August 12, 2006, I revised and vastly expanded the essay; it has been reworked to include excellent comments from readers, to fill in areas that were unclear to readers, to include my latest ideas regarding the events on the night of the visit to the cave (the felix culpa theory), and to integrate other supporting evidence for Good!Snape that I was going to use in a separate essay, such as the fact that Snape spared Flitwick and passed on the opportunity to kill Hermione and Luna when he had the chance.]

Note: On August 29, I expanded the background to the Stoppered Death theory to explain how the theory was introduced on the summer 2005 BNU HBP class.  To make room for this expansion, I had to move the first part of the essay (reasons why Snape cast a real AK that killed Dumbledore instantly) to a separate essay here: http://www.livejournal.com/editjournal.bml?itemid=3621.

The original essay "Why Severus Snape Cast a Real Avada Kedavra on the Tower and Why It Wasn’t Murder" is at the following link with the new title "Fantastic Potions and How They Helped Albus Dumbledore During HBP":
