This was gut wrenchingly sad, and Barty's emotions are written beautifully. The fact that he looks around the flat they share and sees memories of them together hoping that Regulus will come home, but knowing deep down that he won't shows just how much he loves him. I love this line "The rain traces tears down the face of his reflection, but Barty’s grief is bone-deep and he’s past the point of weeping.". It fits so well with the tone of the piece and the rain seems to be the tears he can't shed over his dead lover.

Thank you. I'm so glad you liked it. I really enjoy writing these two together and, while this is quite a bit angstier than what I usually write for them, I had a lot of fun writing it, particularly Barty's way of reacting with grief. The prompt was something that really worked for them.

Wow! This was amazingly raw and sad. It's been a while since a fic has made me tear up - this was beautiful. I love the line at the end about how Barty has nothing left but his Dark Mark, now that Regulus is gone. It really goes to the fanatic dedication he has to the Cause that we see later on.

Thank you! I'm glad you liked it - and I'm really glad you left such an amazing prompt for these characters. It was such fun to work with.

This fic ended up being an exercise in headcanon, really, because it's exactly how I see the roots of Barty's later fanaticism really taking hold.

This is wonderful and incredibly sad - especially with the image we have as readers of Regulus drowning in the cave.
