akfds;hlk;hiweo;afhoiaef;k I AM NOT READY TO TL;DR ABOUT THIS CHAPTER YET BUT QUICK AND DIRTY: WE FIND OUT THAT LILY IS AWESOME AND FINALLY HAD THE STRENGTH TO REALIZE HOW TOXIC HER FRIENDSHIP WITH SNAPE IS.
They are the definition of dysfunctional and I love it and their relationship is constantly of interest and !!! to me, but some people tend to really deny or overlook how problematic it was. They reduce it to Snape just making a mistake and then being full of remorse. Um, no. It slipped for a reason. It slipped because despite being in love with Lily he was a prejudiced dick who, apparently, didn't have a problem calling other people Mudblood. Some take that piece of canon as "proof" that Lily just used the Mudblood Incident as an excuse to ~finally get rid of them~. That is ALSO bs to me because it is clear that LIly made excuses for his behavior. And sometimes we make excuses for REALLY vile behavior under the notion that it won't happen again or that the person in question has learned their lesson. I've, naievly, done that plenty of times when my "friends" have made really racially problematic or borderline (if not outright) racist comments. It can be hard to draw a line in the sand, especially if we're talking about BEST FRIENDS here. But Lily finally dropped him and that wasn't hypocrisy, it was realistic imo. It was just the last straw and nothing more.
But yeah, so there is still so much more I'd like to say but this chapter srsly made me cry for 45 minutes after I read it the first time. I figured that he loved Lily for a couple of years prior to DH's release, so I was so glad that I was right. Also, even though Snape had remorse and all, he was stll a really creepy prick with some v. v. questionable and fucked up views. I mean, dude was okay with James and Harry dying as long as Lily didn't. Understandable but that is in no way excusable.
