I nominated 3 icons of my own and 10 of other makers. I don't have to nominate them in the same category as my own icon.

Yeah, I like it this way too. If it were the other way that might promote people nominating icons of lesser quality so they had a better chance to win. The way it is, you wouldn't be nominating people to compete against you.
