Who: Oscar Weasley and Alexandrea Yearling
Where: The Superfun Library of Awesome
When: Right after the James/Ally/Dureau log
Notes/Warnings: Ummm Oscar and Ally have journal-y conversation in the library and it's glorious and whatever.
After parting ways with Dureau, Ally finds herself in the Library heading toward the counter. She wanted to turn in the books she took out previously before heading back to the Magical beasts section. After finishing with her duties she turned and spotted the very person she came looking for the day before. She knew it was him because she'd seen him so often around James. Walking over she smiled and sat down in the chair in front of him. "Oscar, right?"
"Yes?" Oscar looked up at the girl vaguely, before he recognized her. "Oh! You're Ally, then. Sit down," he gestured to the chair across from him, "let's see what you've got."
"Okay then." She takes the seat and makes her self comfortable by putting her bag next to her. Drawing out her wand, she also takes her journal out as well. "Do you want me to explain what I did or just show you first?"
"Go ahead and explain it," Oscar said, leaning forward eagerly.
Ally took a deep breath before she spoke again. "I had to first understand the charm they had on the journals. Each one is linked together so that any other with the same spell can see what has been written down. That much I'm sure we all knew. After that it was a matter of how do you get around what is sent and what isn't?" Pausing she looked around breifly, she hadn't explained it so throughly before. "I counter charmed the book to confuse it, and then befuddled it to send exactly what I selected. In doing that I created a new charm I called Confuddling. It's a lot easier than it sounds actually.. you tell the journal exactly what to send to whom. So that it overrides the original spell that selected everything at once."
"Yeah, I see," Oscar said, nodding sharply. His eyes were a bit out of focus as he thought. "That's pretty clever, actually." He looked back at her. "Have you found any side effects of the alterations?"
"Not as of yet. I made a few test runs to make sure that it worked properly. I never use a untested charm." She nods as if to herself and points her wand to the book. "Would you like to see it in action?" She was clearly happy that he approved of her charm, it was a very nice feeling.
"Yes, of course," Oscar nodded again, closing his own book and pushing it aside so that he could see what she was doing.
She began by opening her journal to a fresh page, "First you make sure to cast the charm. It only has to be cast once, but you might want to double check that it's working before writing anything too sensitive down." She waved her wand and muttered the counter charm to her charm. "Need to break the charm before I re-charm it." A few golden sparks shot from her journal. "That's how you know the charm's broken." She then waved it again, "Confuddle!" The page glowed a little. "Now you simply write a name of the person you want to read the entry in the left hand corner. Or you put 'all,' for everyone, or you mark off the part of said entry that no one can see." She shows him exactly what she means with each explanation so it shows in her journal.
"That's good," Oscar remarked, watching her work with interest. "And the first years are probably having trouble because they haven't been taught basic Charm Theory, and don't quite understand what Befuddlement is. But then, plenty of our classmates can't manage to befuddle anything."
"I know, that's the part that is frustrating. I'm currently working on making it easier for younger classmates. I thought.." She looked away for a moment before saying, "Maybe you'd like to help me?"
Oscar nodded readily. "Sure, I'd like to. Actually, I thought we might be able to combine my rune work with your charm to make it easier on the little ones."
She smiled brightly and nodded, sending a little bit of her bangs in her eyes. The green from the mistake in Potions was visible then, but she pushed it behind her ears in a fast manner. "Brilliant! I've not done much with runes outside of class but I think I can see how using it with Charms might be easier than straight charms."
"If you know what you're doing," Oscar agreed. "My parents do a lot of work with runes, so I've learned a fair bit just watching them, and then some on my own. It's basically written magic." He pulled out a muggle-style notebook, flipping it open to a tabbed page. "If you know the right symbols, you can get the same results that you would with a wand - for some things. Lots of charms have runic counterparts, but most wizards choose not to use them. Runes, however, are more easily manipulated than spoken spells, and in the case of many charms, more permanent."
"I do see how that could help. It's much easier to learn a Rune someone shows them, and the easier part of the confuddling charm. Say you write the befuddling part in Runes after I confuse the journal. It might work a lot better." She said, trying to work this out in her mind.
"Exactly. The runes allow for more specificity without hindering flexibility," Oscar explained, skimming his notes with Ravenclaw-esque efficiency.
For a moment Ally wanted to ask him why it was that he was friends with James. He seemed a lot nicer, and a lot smarter. But not wanting to kill what might be a future friendship she held her tonuge. "I wonder if you should have been in Ravenclaw Oscar." She smiled. "Because that is a great idea, and the first years should have no problem with it!"
Oscar grinned. "The hat did consider Ravenclaw, but then it decided I was too much of a troublemaker for them. And I am a Weasley." He made a note in his book, circling a string of symbols decidedly. "Now. Want to give this a go?"
