Her dream had come true in her first-year Care of Magical Creatures class. She hadn’t even had to sit - one of the unicorns had trotted over and nudged her until, despite the mud, she’d sat upon the skirt-staining grass. It’d lowered itself just as awkwardly, carefully folding its legs and resting its warm muzzle in her lap. Its breath had been warm against her trembling thighs.
Six years later, another unicorn lay in her lap, carefully twisting its horn away from her face. She stroked its mane gently, trying to ignore the shadow of the Thestral at the field’s edge.
