Tears streamed down his face as he approached Albus’ office. He reached out to knock, but a voice called out, “Come in, Severus,” and he entered.
“I’m going to break my promise.” ‘The many meanings that phrase could have!’ he reflected briefly.
“We’ve been over this before. You have-”
“I have to do nothing!” He broke down. “I can’t kill the one man who cared about me.” He looked up pleadingly. “Please don’t make me.”
Albus looked on sympathetically. “Severus, there’s nothing I can say to convince you. You must convince yourself… for me.”
Somehow, he found the courage.
