Deciphering Logic / Why Bother

Author's Notes: This is told from Ron's POV, while he, Hermione, and Harry are searching for the horcrux's.
I’m freezing.
The cold sinks in through the fabric of my clothes and I can feel it rolling along the back of my neck and down my spine.
I want to go home and sleep in my bed and eat mums food. I want to give up.
And then I watch as Harry sleeps, and it all becomes very clear as to why I don’t. As he tosses and turns and mutters things he can’t control, it all begins to make sense.
I don’t give up because Harry needs me. I don’t give up because that means he will too.

Why does she bother?
She knows I’ll never love her. She knows I’ll never love anyone- ever. And yet she is always by my side- with hands always pried to some part of my body like if she doesn’t keep a good hold of me I’ll probably run off.
I probably would.
And she knows it.
“I’m scared,” I whisper in her ear, quietly.
Her eyes pop open and she shifts slightly, holding me closer. “He’s gone, Malfoy. The Dark Lord can’t touch you now.”
And I wonder again, why she even bothers. In the end, it’s because she cares.
