Charlie loved his job. The sound of a dragon’s roar, the smell of its flame, even the knowledge that a wayward tail or foot could end him: all those things were part of him.
Dragons were powerful, dangerous creatures that would generally rather eat you than anything else, but he still loved them. It wasn’t difficult for Charlie to relate to Hagrid’s attraction to “monsters”, so when he received an invitation to teach Care of Magical Creatures while Hagrid was off doing work for the Order, he laughed and binned it. Kids just weren’t the kinds of monsters he liked.
