Potter had owled him, in hopes Karkaroff had confided where the Horcrux was. No luck there, but Viktor had done the research. He doubted, seriously, that Potter, although brave and decent, would do it.
So he would have to.
He had no Quidditch. Durmstrang was all but falling apart after Karkaroff's disappearance and death.

Six months later, a collar with a bell arrived for Crookshanks with a note written in Bulgarian.
Touched, and unknowing, Hermione fastened Viktor's heart around her cat's neck.
