Snape dreamt of different worlds: everything changed beyond recognition and he flew without a broomstick, sprinted through the dark forest, slithered amid the prickly grass blades.
Nightly he crouched over the dusty Transfiguration tomes, taking notes in his cramped handwriting. Daily he watched McGonagall, waiting for the telltale signs of her turning into a cat, trying to decipher the change in her expression, thoughts - magic -- with his crude Legilimency.
His work paid off.
But when he finally became an Animagus, he found the world just the same as it always had been; Snape still hated it.
He never transformed again.
