Sirius gave Harry his first cigarette.
It was in his bedroom, lights low, Jefferson Airplane on, Buckbeak preening himself on the floor. They lay with the canopy open, an ashtray and all the time in the world between them, chasing thoughts into each other’s ears.
Harry didn’t talk about cupboards and being shut into them, nor Sirius about prisons and damp coldness. They went on about school and pranks as they listened to Queen, girls and nightmares when it was the Sex Pistols. The Turtles brought on a dreamy, perfect silence.
Sirius was sleeping before Harry could ask for another.
