Title: Even If I Think That You Are Right...
House: Ravenclaw
Word Count: 100
Characters/Pairings: Remus, Tonks implied
Challenge: Smoke
A/N: It's a metaphor. Really, I shouldn't listen to "Twilight" (Elliott Smith) when I'm in a rotten mood and concentrating on this prompt. Bad mojo. (Title comes from a line in that song that inspired the drabble: even if I think that you are right / well, I'm tired of being down, I got no fight) Depression takes all sorts of creative turns, don't it? ;)

Happiness.
It had always been elusive, intangible. Forbidden. Slipping through his fingers like smoke, or hope.
After being denied so many times, he had become resigned to its absence. Pleasure was associated with the crushing disappointment that inevitably followed, and so he ceased seeking it. Only once in his life had it been otherwise, but those days were long gone.
And so he refused her, despite the tentative love he'd been cultivating. But to do otherwise would risk too much happiness. It would feel too good.
And he hadn't enough left in him to pay the price for that joy.
